There is also Fort Bravo and Mini Hollywood near Tabernas where the spaghetti westerns were filmed, Mini Hollywood also has zoo and both are a good day out for all ages...

If you are in Nijar you are in the ideal area for exploring the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata which is within Nijar's territory.  You can visit beaches at San Jose, Isleta de Moro, Playa de las Genoveses, Las Negras and Agua Amarga.  Rodalquilar is a delightful small village, and where you can visit the old gold mine and the botanical gardens.  Nijar is a nice little town with lots of shops selling pottery and articles made out of esparto.  There is also an interesting walk nearby to the Crater del Hoyazo, the remains of an ancient volcanic crater where once  garnets were mined and where you can still find these small red stones on the ground.  There's also a good street market on Thursdays in Carboneras and where you can lunch by the beach.

Of course you will need a car to visit all these places and to get the most out of your holiday in Níjar.  Sometimes we tend to forget that Almeria has a lot more to offer than just Mojacar and Vera Playa!
