Hi..... We currently reside in Spain and have our residencia etc. But we bought this villa just to see if we liked the area, and left quite a bit of our stuff in the UK.....We have now purchased a really nice larger villa and want to bring our stuff out using a UK firm. We have had quotes from three and there is a difference of 4k between them!..... One says it has to pack for us as it needs to know what is in each box!?! I don't even know what is in each box now! LOL. What is needed to get our stuff to us? Any light in the darkness please. (We do not want to use a Spanish company thanks so recommendations are not needed)

after Brexit there are now import rules to bring stuff into Spain even if you have owned it for a long time you may be subjected to import taxes.  You have to declare everything that you bring in and have receipts where possible to prove ownership so that is going to be a problem for you if you don't know what is in each box.  Many years ago we relocated from Germany to the UK long before Euro and we had to do the same thing then and we had some stuff confiscated by customs.

if you want to bring it all you may have to pay the money and have it repacked as well.

Perhaps it is more expensive, but it is very advisable to get the firm to pack for you as the items are usually covered by their insurance for normally about 2- 4 weeks after arriving at their destination for damages in transit or complete loss. The men are usually trained to pack better than you or I, and bring special wardrobe boxes for all your clothes. The driver must have a list of everything as it as not only an inventory for them as regards possible claims, but they will also need this to present to the customs officer.

Maybe some if your furniture etc. is not essential and you could cut down on this expense with a part load.  There is IKEA and plenty of other reasonable furniture outlets available now in Spain and electrical goods are more in par with UK prices than they used to be and Amazon.es exist and have an English language option.  If your stuff is not worth insuring then think about replacing it.  It may not cost that much more.  British style furniture doesn't always blend in here as many find out.

You would not find a Spanish removal firm to come over to the UK  in any case, for obvious reasons that I need not mention.

I now have a quote from a reputable firm here in Spain..... and I suppose they might be better than a UK one on reflection! Ours is very expensive modern furniture which we have measured and will fit nicely....and thanks but I am not an Ikea sort of person!  I am quicker at packing than any removal man..... we have packed up over 20 houses now and with the tissue on one side of the table and a roll of bubble wrap on the other I packed them all up in 2 days!   It is just the difference in the prices we have been given as well..... such a huge difference!  Thanks anyway.

I think we will have receipts for the most expensive furniture, it is a lot of personal things we need to get out here that can't be replaced......  only one of the companies has said they need to pack for us.... the others seem fine with us doing it.... so confusing!  Thanks though.....

....

If you're happy with that, that's fine.  I had quotes for part loads from Pickford, Britannia and another one I can't remember, for a part load when my mum died .  They all did packing  and insured, but I chose Britannia.  Even with special wooden protection on the paintings there was a slight damage in one canvas.

When we moved out here in 1988, we had a lot of antique furniture which I felt were too grand and too big for my house in Spain, so some  stayed with family and a neighbour bought the rest.  We moved household items, Amstrad WP, and personal stuff ourselves in a large Toyota van and did an itemised inventory.  Customs were very slow and we had to spend the night in Santander before they presented us with the bill the next day

I had a friend in Mojácar who moved back to England some years back and she had her original expensive furniture, household and personal stuff including all family photos, taken back by an English guy who had been recommended via the Mojácar grapevine..  As bad luck would have it, all the stuff went missing and the 'nice' guy disappeared.  What made things worse if possible, there was no way she could prove the transaction had taken place as she had no written proof as 'he seemed so nice' and his mate who had helped him load the heavy stuff was the son of a well known English bar owner on the playa!  The bargain price she paid turned out very costly in the end.

It's not easy any way you choose, but hopefully you won't ever want to return and have to repeat the process once you are finally here!

Good luck!
