As it currently stands as a non EU citizen your choices are limited.

The 90/180 Schengen shuffle is of course easiest and no paperwork required other that ETIAS when that goes online - simple traveller check system for security purposes and nominal cost for 3 years.

There is a Schengen visa but that is for persons from specific countries that require a pre approved visa before entering Schengen even for short stay , all I read seems to say it is also only for 90 days max.

After Jan 1st 2021 getting caught over staying will be become much more likely - the penalties can be a pain ....

What is not known is "if" there may be something new arising out of the negotiations going forward that would cater to the snow bird crowd and those with second homes in Spain .....

I suspect this question may come up a lot either later this year or most certainly in 2021 when restrictions on being non eu start to bite.

:-(

thanks thats interesting - yes we can do the 90/180 thing but sometimes want more flexibility; I' cant be in Spain all the time unfortunately due to the tax implications with all my income coming for the UK

it seems from what I have been reading, that the problem is not really an EU one as the 90/180 thing applies today, just not checked on.

It was always going to be an issue for Brits after the visa weaver thing in 2021 as we are outside of Schengen area in UK and that is when they will start the in and out checks

maybe they will introduce a new visa for people who just wants to spend time and money in Spain! I know other country's are doing a golden ticket thing

Golden Visa  , available to invest in certain EU countries. If you use that Visa any time spent over 183 days will still make you tax resident, unless certain options apply to you - and that would require an accountant to explain or lawyer to apply for.

Yes - you’ll need your pet passport if you need to go to the vets

Just a small correction - there is no new law for time periods; if you don’t have Residencia, you are already restricted to 90 days in any 180 day period.  However you work it, you can stay in Spain for a total of up to 90 days, however that 90 days is made up - be it a week here or a mont...

...h there.  Once you have reached 90 days within that 180 day period, you may not return before a further period of 90 days has elapsed (or the six month allowed has elapsed and starts again).  This is the law now; just expect it to be enforced more stringently post-Brexit

I like to overwinter up to 150 days but now reduced to 90 days so it’s Nov-Jan or Dec -Feb and then go somewhere else for a month or so outside Schengen. This year OK but ?for next winter! But if come again a month in June or July does it stop you returning for those months the next year. Residence not really suitable for this pattern. Hope there will be better Visas  for Owners who are UK Resident!
