Hi there. We’re heading to Los Gallardos for 4 weeks in August. Is there a cheap car hire place? We had been told it was very inexpensive to hire but everywhere I’ve checked online is the opposite! Please help! 😊 Thanks in advance.

Summer is very expensive but have a look at Costa Coches at http://www.costacochesrentacar.biz/ and Al Andalus at http://alandaluscarhire.com/ where you will probably get a better deal than with the majors.

I would like to add, we have used Costa Coches, very good people and service, but we had to change to a mainline company.

When one hires a car, a deposit, usually around 300 Euros is blocked on your CC. Money is not taken unless you have an accident etc. With a block, it is just released. With Costa Coches the 300 went through the CC and afterwards they re-imbursed it, but because of the exchange going in and out we lost another $29. As we hire every few weeks we had to go elsewhere. We find  our local Europecar works out very well. We also check for specials that they come up with quite often.  Our last week cost 65 Euros, our 10 days coming up 85 Euros.  If you can book ahead it can be quite cheap.

Where is your local Europecar? I’ve tried online and they’re giving ridiculous prices. 😢

Hi Glynnis, I'm an avid surfer, so I just put  " Mojacar car hire"  into google and, as it does, it will come up with 15 companies, no you don't need to go to each one, it will show you the least expensive, oftens it is Keddy or similar but they operate through Europecar. same pickup, same service, very pleasant girl in office but not much English. I just put in some dates  and a small car comes up at 76 euros for week into feb. Maybe you've done all this and don't consider that inexpensive, or maybe you require a larger car, but that's how we roll. Our Visa card covers all excess etc. so apart from the standard "hold" that's it. full-to full tank. Also some ages are up to 65 or 69 or 70, we've never been asked for more $.  Hope that  helps, we always do ours online, firstly because of the deals, and secondly because we just take a snapshot (no printer here) and take it into the office,  all done without the language barrier.  We do not go the Goldcar route, too many bad experiences. Costa Coches very nice but car older and needed brakes re-doing !

To avoid having anything blocked off your card:

Almeria/Alicante/Malaga: join Avis Preferred and then of course rent a car through Avis
Murcia/Alicante/Malaga: use Centauro but only their most expensive Premium Plan

We do both of these as I detest having money blocked on my card which has caused me problems in the past, particularly in the USA, so I do whatever I can to avoid it, and now in Spain I never have any money blocked off my card with the 2 methods above. I also have excess insurance in the UK which I use for Avis and they are happy to accept that and don't press me to take their insurance. I don't need it for Centauro as their Premium Plan comes with full, no excess, insurance.
