Hi, my partner returns to Spain next week after being diagnosed with the above medical problems. As she is not on the Spanish medical system, does anyone know if most meds for these problems are available over the counter and if not, are there any doctors (English or English speaking) where we can get prescriptions made out? We are near Huercal Overa but believe there is an English doctor in Mojacar?

Many thanks in advance for any information,

Tony.

Hi there, although on the Spanish system it is often more convenient to just buy OTC especially when we are off on trips. So I am on a lipid lowerer and a beta-blocker OTC but not  sure about antianginal. Just take tablet packets to Chemists and see.

If you have EHICs can you  not go to GP & produce card? Yes there is a private GP in Mojacar at 50€ to be seen and maybe extra for script.

Hope that helps,

Hi Dr Bob, have been told today she can register with a local doctor for 3 months, possibly renewable for 6/9 months with passport and EHIC card. She is not resident as doesn't live here permanent so not on Spanish system anyway. We were going to go into local pharmacia and see what was available.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi, if your close to H/O why dont you consider popping along to the surgery in Urcal ?,  Miriam the dispensing receptioist speaks ok english and could get you a sit down with Rosa the doctor to go through the medical conditions and the Spanish equivalents.

My partner and I are both type 2 diabetics and are retired and have medical cards so getting meds is relatively easy but as others have said you can by meds OTC here with your Ehic.

Getting registered for a medical card takes around 2 months and you can get a temporary card to get meds meantime. You'll need an NIE, be registered at the H/O medical centre and have a prefferred doctor, register with social services etc, you dont need residencia to get your medical card but partner who's villa it is showed proof of ownership, padron etc etc.

Anything else just ask.
