Hi

We are just in the process of buying a villa in near Huercal-Overa (Taberno) and whilst staying at a rental in San Juan De Los Terreros we had a conversation with the guy who was looking after that pool.  He said there was a company that made pool covers that were cut to fit and these were better to use as there was no gap between the cover and the water.

Has anyone heard of these covers or this company?  I did notice that the cover for the pool we are buying wasn't on one of those rolling mechanisms (not sure what you call them) but if anyone can give advice on the best way to cover a pool for when we are back in the UK it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Generally Pools have two types of covers - a winter blanket that stays on all winter with the slow release chlorine floater underneath. Then there is the lightweight "I am here to just stop the leaves and stuff" pool cover, sometimes you can get these in a material that will also double as a pool heater through transference as they float on the top, this type of cover usually comes with a roller to allow it to be used by one person. Any decent pool supplier can provide this type of cover.

Hi Ossy

thanks for your reply, very helpful.  I think we will need the 'winter blanket' cover - but then again during the summer months when we are back and forth the "I am here to just stop the leaves and stuff" also sounds good.  Not sure what to do now.  Is it okay to leave it uncovered for more than a month??  The roller sounds very useful.

I'm also wondering whether we need to find someone to show us how to care for it (chemicals) etc ... in the words of Manuel "I know nothing.."

Hi, it's Bob and Sandra friends of Ozzy. Ozzy has a great Spanish chap that.brought Ozzy's pool back & instructed him in maintenance. Oz has recommended him to several others all of whom have been delighted..Will leave it to Oz to give contact details as we have a Communal Pool.

Now to the made-2-measure concept. If you obtain a copy of The Almeria Focus Magazine & directory, (also on www ) and look under Pool &'Pool Maintenance there are those you may to contact who may be able to give you info.

Lastly you may wish to join the old Arboleas Forum www.arboleas.co.uk and post there. You will in all likelihood be overwhelmed by responses as Brits become quite obsessed with their pools.

Best wishes,

Bob and Sandra

Hi Bob & Sandra (friends of Ozzy) - THANK YOU for replying so quickly!!  Am copying your message so I can download a copy of the magazine and will be joining the Arboleas forum (will they let me given we will be in Taberno??  'Tabernians' may not be allowed lol.

Great news about the Spanish chap (wonder if he mind me practicing my terrible Spanish on him?).

We feel like time is standing still here in the UK, it was only a week ago our offer was accepted, it feels like a lifetime since we were back there, keeping myself busy by packing up stuff to go in the van.  Hopefully we will be completed by end of October .. who knows lol.

Thank you again

Ren

The Spanish Chap that I used is http://www.natxomantenimiento.es/ , his name is Nacho, all phone numbers on the bottom of his website, (the english one is mine to aid him in his transition to the Brit expat market from the predominantly Spanish market he had before. He is also on "Whatsapp".

With regard to the pool, if you are not using for a month I would recommend you cover it, otherwise you will get Algae forming which will be a process initself to be rid of and which in turn will discolor your grout, put a slow release chlorine in it too.

Regards and best of luck on your impending move to Taberno/HO

Ren,

On a side note and basically what I did was pay him for 4 weeks work and if you want him to carry on with it weekly then that's great but if not just tell him you would like to watch him and ask him to show you how to work the filter and backwash /rinse etc. He will gladly show you, if you need him to do the pool periodically while you are not here then he will do that too, as a handy man he is good too for fixing stuff, I am not the most Handy round the house......Bob & Sandra will vouch......lol. so always good to know someone that is.

We got WS cover pools of Mojacar to measure and fit partners pool cover.

There are 3 "weights"of pool cover, 1 is obviously the lightest weight, the other 2 are more durable, theyre graded basically by the average time they tend to last.

Partner has the heavier grade that we put on on days like today where the weathers not great but the pool water retains the heat thats there plus if we're not swimming the cover will absorb any suns rays/heat and hold it in.

Think bubble wrap on steroids and you wont be far wrong.

The only type of cover you could unravel off a roller on an average 8x4 "Roman" ended pool by yourself might be the lightest weight because the heavier ones can be awkward not to tip over unless you secure it to the pool patio.

As for basic pool care, you can get a basic water testing kit from lots of places, we got ours from the Consum supermarket in Huercal Overa, it'll give you basic chlorine and alkalinity readings and you can go from there, we have a guy from M & N builders called Nigel who's been looking after the pool for the previous owners who used the villa 3 months on, 3 months off for a number of years, when we viewed then bought the villa, the pool was sparkling.

Nigel cleans the sides, hoovers the pool floor, tests the water and if he thinks its needed pops a couple of chlorine tablets in the chlorinator floater and occasionally backwashes the filters.

Because the pumps and skimmers are on every day we clean out the skimmer baskets and go around with the pole nets and in almost 6 months havent had any problems at all.

If your pool water and pool in general looks less than sparkling or looks to be going off colour you may be recommended to "Shock" your pool back to life which I believe means giving a massive chlorine "injection" plus a thorough rub n scrub.

You can get lots of advice and supplies from the onestop pool store on the Longo poligono on the way into Albox.

Otherwise if your hands on at all check out youtube for pool care videos and advice.

Or......... check out any of the pool cleaners on the forums or free magazines or papers as suggested.

As an aside ren, when youre packing, dont throw any garden tools away apart from maybe your mower lol, "easy maintenance" ie gravel still needs weeding, plants need to be put in tubs or the ground, hedges still need to be cut, you'll get advice from everywhere about what to do about certain hedges similar to the ones you'll see along the motorway that have dangerous residue, cut them back using long sleeves, gloves, face masks and never ever mulch the cuttings as you'll end up in hospital like one guy I was told about recently who was in a bad way for over 6 weeks after inhaling the dust from his mulcher.

Partner had a heat pump fitted to extend the pool "season" both ends of the year but as you'll find out there are all kinds of pool heating devices from solar panels right down to hundreds of feet of piping laid end to end with all kinds of heath robinson adaptors to get water into the pool.
