Irrigation system

We have an in place irrigation system for the garden which came with the property, also have located a pump house the pipes are coming from. Anyone on here that knows why none of it works !
Previous owner said they stopped using because sand got in the holes and couldn't be bothered. We did find a number of old pumps in the shed..possibly broken. Would bungled up holes cause pump to break ?
Shame we can't use it.
