To hire or bring own car

We hope to relocate to Spain late October this year (fingers crossed) and had intended on buying a new car once there rather than bring our UK car over. However, we’ve just had a look and it seems we cannot buy unless we A) own a property or b) have a 12 month rental agreement. With the weeks / months ticking away, and not being able to put our property here in the UK on the market till who knows when, we had decided to rent for six months and hopefully buy within that period. Can anyone confirm if the above regulations are correct or if there might be another option? Many thanks, Karen

When we came to Spain we hired a car for the 1st 4 weeks because as you say you cant buy a car without a permanent address evidenced by either the property deeds for a home that you own or a long term rental agreement. You will also need to obtain an NIE number and to register on the padron at your local town hall.

If you are in Arboleas and you are not fussy about the car then I would recommend SRS Vehicle Services who are located by the funny traffic lights on the main road between Arboleas and the Hotel Overa. They hire out cheap runabout type cars at a fraction of the prices charged by the mainstream hire companies.
