We have 2 wood stoves for each lounge and also had oil fired central heating installed, we use one or the other .

If you just need quick warm up oil heating is great for when you don't feel like lugging in wood !

Wood burners chuck out a lot of heat but generally need maintaining over night to keep home warm, hubby often wakes up early hours anyway and puts on couple of logs , by morning it is still salvageable without re starting from scratch.

If you go for wood burners make sure you get capacity for size of room to warm and look out for olive, oak , remember some wood not good for burning.

Hope that helps

If you have a wood burner get a fire fan too.  Works on kinetic energy, so free to run and makes a massive difference in circulating the heat
