Rent a car

Definitely arrange it before.  I have found the Ryanair cars site to be the best (you can use it even if you do not fly with them) for finding cheap deals - some really cheap: one time (out of season) we got a Mercedes for less than €5 per day. This time of year it won't be as cheap, but still worth using the comparison site.

If you really want to push it, get a price through the site, then phone the company direct. Sometimes they will do you a slightly better deal too (they do not have to pay the agency fee to the site). Not guaranteed and some will not even give as good a price on the phone as on the web, but worth a try.

Some things to watch out for though - the prices will typically be without full cover (typically an excess of around €1000 is not uncommon), and the car hire company's cover will probably double the price or more of the headline price. You will probably be better to organise your own cover (or might already have it through a bank or credit card) for the excess - if you do though, they will still try a very hard sell and will be super picky about every scratch when you hand the car in, so be picky when you pick it up and drop it off too to make sure they are not ripping you (or your insurance company) off.

Also I found the really cheap deals only last a month. Searching for a long term will not find them and prices go crazy. Last time I hired, I actually did two separate hires for that reason, as it was a lot cheaper. Again one you see the prices for 30 days, it can be worth phoning directly to the company to see if they can extend it.

Hi Martin what was the two prices ? Is it rent in England then take the insurance out here when you get to the airport ?
