Hi

The first thing you need to do is register on your local padron and get a certificate.

Then you apply for residencia. You will need proof of sufficient income, proof of health cover and your padron certificate. Also your passport and a photograph.  If you've got a job and are paying into the Spanish social security system that should mean you get free health care here. If not, you will need to purchase a 12 month health policy. If you're not working then you'll need to prove you can support yourself, eg, with a pension.

You can make the application for residency yourself but I would recommend getting a gestor to do it for you. They will only charge around 100 euros and will take care of everything.

Once your application is approved you then go to the designated police station/office to get your fingerprints taken. About a month or so later you will go back to the police to collect your TIE card. You get your NIE (tax number) with the TIE card.

You can only exchange your driving license once you have your residency.

Best of luck!

Hi Juliet, Thank you very much for your helpful information. I forgot to mention that i am a Pensioner and i hold a EU Passport (IRISH). I hope this does'nt complicate things.  Oh just one more thing Juliet, Ive heard that after the 31/12/2020 to get your licence Changed you have to retake a Spanish driving test,  is this true?

If you have an Irish passport, Brexit won’t affect you, likewise if you have an Irish driving Licence, you still be able to exchange after 31/12.  If you have a UK Licence, then yes, after 31/12 you will no longer be able to swap your Licence and will have to retake a driving test.

So basically i would need a Spanish Driving license before the 31/12/2020,as mine is a UK one, and to get one i would need to get my Residencia first, which would take how long approximately?

That very much depends on how quickly you get your paperwork together and apply for an appointment at Almería Extranjeria - assuming you will be living within Almería province, that is the office you will go to.

Normally from appointment for application of TIE to collection of TIE card is four weeks BUT as you are on an Irish passport you are still applying for Residencia.  It’s not unknown for the office to issue your Residencia card on the same day you apply, but as we get later into the year, appointments are becoming scarcer.  I would definitely make the very first thing you do on arrival to be to speak to a gestor who can facilitate your application, make the appointment, organise the paperwork etc and let them know of the fact that whilst you have an Irish passport, you have a UK Licence ..... are you not able at the moment to swap for an Irish (EU) Licence? May save you some headaches if you are ... but I guess unless you are actually residing in Ireland, that’s not an option?

Hi.

Lucky you having an Irish passport! It's so much simpler for you as there's no Dec 31 deadline for residency or driving license and your freedom of movement within Eu will continue.

All the best!

Most definitely - ownership of property is not a prerequisite
