A Close Shave with Squatters when buying a property
For advice/information only.
I bought a property and collected the keys last week. I was initially confused because my door keys didn't fit.
The estate agent came to see and advised me my property had been broken into a the lock changed.
Fortunately no one was in and after calling the local police (Very fast service incidentally) was then given permission to call the Locksmith. Locks changed. No damage - apart from the door when the lock was first changed. A few items inside. Now got new locks AND a security alarm system.
Allegedly if the squatters were present and savvy they have the law on their side - just like the UK. And eviction can take some time.
So - be warned. Don't worry unduly, but try and make sure that you actually get the property and its clear before some aliens invade and spoil the dream.
I'm talking this up a bit to make it readable. It can worry some people, events like this. I was lucky. Just a few quid to get secure. If youre buying from overseas try and talk this through with the legal people and estate agency before its too late. MY estate agent was fabulous in the event. I wont mention them since I'm not advertising for them and don't have their permission either. But I had a fantastic service.
