Hi I'm wanting to get some info on garrucha as me and my partner are thinking of buying an apartment. Any advice on the area would be great we are from Belfast and are dying to get a wee holiday home for now then maybe a permanent move. We are both self employed I'm a hairdresser and also do make up n waxing so I'm looking forward to meeting new people and maybe doing a little bit of work when I'm more permanent in the area.

Hi Claire,

Garrucha is a working Spanish town all year round. It has a beautiful beach and the restaurants there are excellent. It is in the warmest and driest part of mainland Spain. Property there is probably cheaper than that in nearby Mojacar Playa. Your immediate neighbours would most likely be Spanish and not holidaymakers. (I'm open to correction here). The open air market every Friday is good and you can shop 'til you drop. Garrucha is not a resort (as we know resorts in other parts of Spain) and is well equipped with supermarkets, hairdressers, beauticians, hardware, pharmacies etc.

and if you are easily offended don't read on . . . . . Does Garrucha or the rest of coastal Spain need another hairdresser/nail-technician/beautician? I think not. You will have much competition and as Garrucha is largely Spanish, you probably would have some difficulty getting a job waiting on tables. Forget about airport-runs also (too many, too often).

I'll stop because many don't want to hear the truth and I could find a firing squad waiting for me next time I go out. Sorry!

Hi Claire, sorry to say but have to agree with Matthew. As a holiday home Garrucha is a lovely location my Husband and I lived there for 3 months in the Fuentamar apartments near to the Bourganvillers roundabout whilst we looked for a property to buy. It has all the amenities  you could want, but to live here permantly and work you would have to be  fluent in Spanish and Matthew is right  a very Spanish community. Good luck in whatever you decide and let us know how you get on. Jan

We have a 3 bed 2 bath apartment in Garrucha, near the police station on Calle Mayor most of our neighbours are Spanish, we do have an British couple living in the block but have not met them yet.  It is, as Mathew says, a busy working town and there is quite a few hairdressers and beauticians, as there are in Mojacar.  There could be an opportunity for a mobile hairdresser and beautician within the area serving the expat community but you would need to research that.
We love Garrucha but need to purchase a villa as we have 3 dogs who will be coming with us as we are about to move permanently to the area. Unfortunately we cannot find a suitable one in Garrucha at the moment.  The people are very friendly and most can speak some English but really appreciate it if you try a few words of Spanish.

Garrucha is also great for buses, there is one every half hour to Mojacar and also to Vera. Vera has a bus station with buses to Mucia and Almeria, also Granada. Exclusive shuttles run a pick up service to and from Almeria and Murcia airports with a pick up point in Garrucha.  We have also met other British couples with apartments in Garrucha so, you won’t be alone should you decide it’s the place for you.  We love it .

Thanks for your advice. It's much appreciated. We both have businesses at home so the permanent move is only a far along idea. But we are 100% looking at a holiday home. Garrucha looks amazing. Look forward to getting something organised. Hopefully get to meet a few new people aswell. Good luck on the move I have a dog myself like another baby.

Fuentemar near las Buganvilas is technically Vera Playa and under the umbrella of Vera town hall.  But as the gentleman said.  Garrucha is still very Spanish. We've lived on the outskirts for over 20 years  and although we have our post delivered to the post office in Garrucha and go to the health centre there so visit it regularly,  we are based just on the fringe, up the road from las Buganvilas so we tend to go down there more often.  Garrucha is lovely but you need to speak at least some of the language to get by.

The whole area though is gorgeous and not so crowded as Mojacar.

Lynn is right it is a beautiful area and so very friendly. The Spanish people are very friendly and if you make the effort they will laugh with you or at you when you get it wrong.  We frequent a Spanish bar where we live and it took us about 6 months for them to accept us but now they are brilliant.

Have no commercial interest in it but if you are looking for a agent then can I recommend Alphonso at Zar which is  nearly opposite the Santander bank in Calle Mayor in Garrucha. He is a really nice guy, speaks good English and he puts himself out for you and I can't say that about some of the agents I have dealt with.....Sold my apartments I have had both in Garrucha and Palomares through his company. They have plenty of places to purchase and rent. Would recommend going to see him.
