Carol, you’ll get many different opinions on this - Dr Bob will I think firmly advocate keeping accounts offshore, others will sit somewhere between - all I can offer is my opinion based on experience thus far : I operate only a Spanish account, with Sabadell.  As has been highlighted, the staff at Vera are superb and I have had no issues at all operating and maintains a Spanish account.  I’ve had no problems paying money in a d have found the staff responsive and helpful in the extreme to any query I’ve had.

This is one of those things that no one can tell you what’s best; because what’s best is what’s best for you.  In other words you have to take a long hard look at your financial situation and then decide what is going to work for you .... errrr sorry if this hasn’t been as helpful as you’d hoped .... I was hoping to be able to offer more advice, but your banking is such a personal thing, no one can tell you what’s best for you - only you will know that ....,

If by long term you mean more than 3 months then yes, you’ll need Residencia.  A Spanish account may well assist that application, depending on how you are demonstrating income for Residencia application.  Having a Spanish account did make things a little easier for my Residencia applicst

Hi ! Any coments on the bank Cajamar ?  Bank charges, english speaking and helpful staff ?

We bank with Cajamar and the branches in Mojacar and Palomares speak english, not been into the one in Vera but they advertise that they speak english. I do most of my banking online and the website has an english version. There is a helpline number to get through to an english speaking operator.

Bank charges are dependent on account you open but the account we have avoids charges because we invested in the Cajamar co-operative share save scheme, coupled with this you also need to use your card for purchases a certain amount of times during the year otherwise you will get charged a yearly card fee of €30.

One thing we did discover was that you need to link a Spanish mobile number to your account in order to use it for secure internet purchases.

We have had no problems with Cajamar even when we were still based in the UK.

Our experience with Bankia has been almost totally negative. They do not answer the phone nor emails.
