Got a worrying message from my son who is a Spanish resident, and been living with hi family near Malaga for 8 years. While he was spending Christmas in Lisbon, he needed to attend a hospital following a dog bite.  Apparently his U.K. EHIC has long since expired, and although he is a fully registered Spanish resident with full access to health care in Spain, he isn’t able to get an EHIC here to cover emergency health care while in the rest of the EU.  Is there a way round this about from making sure he has the right travel insurance?

Buy travel insurance in Spain and then they will be covered worldwide or Europe, apart from Spain where they live and have health care..

Thanks -I realised travel insurance would be one way through but suspect they are not going to want to ho down that route with a family of 5 meeting other family members living in Portugal. I just wanted to double check whether anyone has information on the availability of EHIC in Spain to British/Irish passport holders with Spanish residence

Also realised I should have proof read my original message. Meant to say “apart from buying travel insurance” not “about travel insurance”

Then it depends on age, if they are not of retirement age , as they are residents in Spain they are not entitled to the UK EHIC, and also not entitled to the Spanish equivalent.

If they are of retirement age then they can claim the UK EHIC. But this only entitles you to emergency cover.

Thanks - that’s rather what I thought!  I couldn’t find the link though. Mind you, he may have the usual battle with the functionarios who may try to argue that although this is the system for the acquisition of the card, it doesn’t prove he is entitled to it!

Mayyyyyybe - but quite often not.  As long as he meets the criteria and can offer the proof, 9 times out of 10 it’ll go pretty smoothly.

I still remember with horror the day I received a letter from extranjería denying me residence on the basis I didn’t have health cover, when they had a copy of my S1 certificate!  I decided not to appeal, as that could take for ever and simply paid an addition 12€ to lodge a new application.  Do you have a link for the criteria?

No - it should be on the link I supplied.  He’ll need his SS number as well as NIE (I think)
