Bringing dog from U.K. after Brexit

In case anyone nearly ends up in the same position as I was heading towards, I thought I should post something about what we need to do when bringing our dog from U.K. to Spain.
As it had only cost me 24€ to get a certificate to take by dog back to the U.K. from Spain this March, I naïvely assumed the process would be similar in terms of hassle and cost when coming back out again for the winter. But no!! Despite having an EU pet passport, rabies jab and test, +full vaccination and worming etc record, I needed to get an Animal Health Certificate. I wasn’t too worried about this and made the appointment for the relevant date for travel. Only after I’d done that, did I start to wonder about the cost. My usual vet was going to charge £180 for the certificate and £55 for the appointment. By phoning around, I managed to find a vet who could do it for £135, although some vets were charging as much as £250, and many did not have much availability. As it’s only a form filling piece of paper I’m after and not diagnosis and treatment, I’ve gone with the cheapest.
The moral of the story is get it sorted out well I advance, check prices, and once your dog is over in Spain, get them a proper Spanish EU pet passport. This is way cheaper, and doesn’t expire whereas the U.K. health certificate only lasts 4 months!
