Having bought a property a couple of weeks ago, returned to the UK with the intention of coming back to Spain for good in June, opening bank accounts, renewing rescidentia etc etc, now all that appears to have been halted for the foreseeable future. What do we do if we can’t get back before the 31/12/20 if we can’t renew rescidencia, then we can’t afford to move there as our monthly pensions won’t be sufficient to meet the criteria requirements. It’s so worrying. Any ideas would be appreciated

Ah Maggie,

I feel for you, how worrying indeed! I’m not sure I have anything to offer, except to say that I cannot see a travel ban lasting for the next 9 months, or rather I cannot currently imagine a world which looks like that.

My plans too are now in the air, as I planned to arrive in June 2020, and I’m resigned to simply sitting with the uncertainty for the time being and remaining prepared to travel as and when the opportunity arises, as any lifting of restrictions may be only temporary when it happens. Lets hope the current restrictions are successful in controlling the spread of the virus so that we can safely move around again.

Currently, as I understand it,  so long as you can show you were residing in Spain before the end of Dec 2020 and had begun the process for residentia before the deadline then there is a grace period of 6 months to complete the application. Perhaps someone else would be able to confirm this for us?

Worrying times indeed, stay safe and positive and lets hope we may meet in the sunshine later this year.

What a lovely reply. Thank you so much for taking the time.

Let’s hope we can sit in the sunshine and look back on this dreadful period, xx

Not the same situation as yourself.  But I have been renting a lovely apartment on a long-term contract in Roquetas for over one year now.  I, as many do, have spent a lot of money purchasing items for the apartment and making it comfortable for myself.  I had booked to travel to my apartment 11 March, returning to UK on 25th.  I was hoping to see a solicitor  regarding applying for residency, now my plans like a lot of people's have been shattered.  I feel trapped and so disappointed.  I am still paying the rental etc., on my apartment, hoping that the present awful situation will pass but I think that will be later rather than sooner.  Let's hope that I am wrong.

Regards Kathleen

Hi there,

I bought a property last year but have been a bit backwards and forwards. I got my residencia in January 2020 and was looking forward to spending most of my time in Spain from now on.

I went back to London as my partner had a health problem and wham, Coronavirus got our flights back cancelled.  I have my pension paid into my Spanish bank account, am paying electricity, Internet, water in Spain. To top it all, I have no idea what plants are flowering, bearing fruit or simply dying. Isn’t it awful. I just pray I will manage to save most of the plants & trees when we can get back to normal, if ever that will be possible.

So I know exactly what you are going through and let’s hope the travel ban is short lived.

Yes, it’s a dreadful time we are experiencing but let’s hope everyone in this forum survives what is now the worst world health crisis since the 1918 flu pandemic that killed 50 million.

I am also pretty sure that border controls will be relaxed well before 31 December and that you will get your residencia OK. I have had to accept that I am not going to make it for a parent’s 90th birthday in the U.K. in April, I will hopefully be able to make a flying visit there in the summer!

Hi Kathleen,

Oh that is a bit rubbish, and must be very frustrating and worrying for you at the moment.

Is there anything you can do from here meantime, such as Skyping with prospective legal representation and seeing if you can at least gather the info you need and settle on who is to help you??  your rental agreement should mean you can get registered on the Padrón and sort out your bank accounts etc, which I think, though I’m not sure, can all be done on your behalf in your absence by granting a power of attorney for a legal rep to act on your behalf. Please understand I’m no expert and I cant recommend anything, I’m just putting thoughts out there so you may feel a bit less helpless for now!

There seem to be a good few recommendations on here for local firms to talk to for some advice, or maybe you already have a trusted Spanish representative.

All the best and lets hope that travel can happen within a reasonable time

Beannie

Fingers crossed Chris. Horrible having to miss such a special birthday, but it will be all the more special when you finally get there. Hope sooner rather than later x
