I have noticed several posts that mention bringing a pet to Almeria. I may be saying the obvious, but feel that I must point out that the pet passport scheme will cease to operate from Nov 1st without a 'deal'. Taking a pet abroad will require blood sample evidence of rabies immunity, and that can take up to three months. Not realising this could be catastrophic. All would be travellers can get all the info from the uk government site that deals with pet passports.

I hope to bring my pet mid November for four months, all travel and accommodation has been organised, and am waiting with baited breath for developments. It may all have to be scrapped.

Only for travel into EU. If you visit Spain prior to a possible no deal, then UK return is no problem , as nothing has changed.

I would add that you are talking about holidaying with a pet.

For those who are emigrating with a pet (one way no return) as long as you keep the id tag from a rabies injection ,one month old, you will be free to travel to Spain, as quoted by Defra without a pet passport. You will need Spanish passport and idtag injection for your pet and rabies yearly, compulsary. We found pet pasports in Uk horrendous price. In Spain it cost us 35€.

Trust this clarifys and helps.

New Note Added.

Must add, I should have clarified - id tag is batch number of rabies injection.

All the waiting time is for owners who wish to travel to Spain and then return with their pet.

Unnecessary if you are emigrating to Spain with your pet. Phone DEFRA for confirmation as there is no link for emigrating on their website.

The UK Gov website also spells out the procedures for deal or no deal brexit.

If you are on a one way journey, get your pet chipped in Spain, the Guardia equipment does not recognize UK id chips. Besides its much cheaper.

I think the difficulty is the other way round. If you travel to the U.K. from Spain (France) we found it was the British pet passport office at Calais that check the pet passport, our dog’s microchip etc. We did this on 29 July. Today we returned from Folkestone and no-one, least of all the French side, was interested in looking at his Euro PP. It seems unlikely this will change on the EU side if Brexit happens at Halloween 😱

Yes

You are right about the return to UK checking the dogs. That was the whole purpose of my original post about the pet passports. I did not want anyone to fall foul of the rule changes if we do not have a 'deal' on Brexit. It would be disastrous if pet owners were to be turned away after Nov 1st for not having the required certificate of proof.

The U.K. have always been keen to keep rabies from our island. The pet passport scheme was reluctantly adopted, and even now after years of its use, I know several vets who distrust it and would welcome a return to testing the blood levels. This is despite no rabies being brought into the UK, at least as far as I know.

Life is easier if you have a horse!!

I understand there has been just one case of rabies in Europe in the last 40 years. Leishmaniasis is a greater risk!

ID tag will not be sufficient if a no deal, the EU will consider England a third world country, and a blood test confirming the rabies jab is successful will be required. This is currently taking 8 to 12 weeks as labs undertaking testing are under pressure. Best to leave before 31st.
