watched the news last night and they had a piece about the number of Brits who have not made themselves legal and must now leave the country because their 90 days is up.  People who have lived here under the radar for ages and now find that it is coming back to bite them on the b.m!

that's what happens when you stick your head in the sand.

It was bound to happen,as you say they had plenty of time to get in order,

the show 'Bargain loving Brits in the sun' will be short of a few people

The GC never made money last year for their Xmas do, so catching those will be a good income.

I dont know how it will work, but when working in Germany/Belgium/Holland ilegally years ago, they caught you, locked you up for a couple of days then deported you by taking you to the nearest ferry port. they were very nice even paying your fare

In the UK there's no requirement to hide off radar, as you will be paid benefits, have your medical expenses paid and given a house courtesy of the tax payer for as long as you want!

Not so ... the first time they have to pay car tax, register for ITV, pay basura - any one of a myriad of government / Ayuntamiento related things where a financial number - a NIE - must be supplied, they’ll be found out and likely names passed to Guardia Civil.  I have been asked to show TIE a couple of times now - Ayuntamiento and Correos to name but two...

ALSO - INSIDE our urbanización today, Guardia Civil and Policia Local set up a checkpoint and stopped everyone arriving or leaving, asking for Carne de conducir / TIE or passport ...

on Spectrum this am interview with a couple who were moaning they have to return to the UK after being here for 11 years! saying they had private med insurance but can't get vaccinated but had been called for them in UK? never been back for as long as they will have to now and will be back in September!  How have they got away with it? Tax,driving licences, car tax,etc it should all be Spanish if they've been here that long.  They said that the ferry from Santander is fully booked so that'll be a lot of empty properties here.  Just off to do my tax return which is more than in UK but rather be legal and live a cheaper live here than take a chance.

Dario nice to see you on a civilised post with sensible input after the consequences of brexit onslaught . You can be helpful with educated information here . I’ve often wondered how it all works . I had rolling 6 month rentals from 2008 until 2011 paying rent direct to owners in a few different properties . Drove a car over but always took it back to uk for mot , taxed in uk and fully insured . I had my padronand went with solicitor to get my Nie . But was I legal or illegal for those years .? Since then I just do January, March and November ,pre COVID of course .

If you did 6 months without Residencia, to the letter of the law you were "illegal" BUT - and it is a big but - as an EU Citizen, you had freedom of movement, freedom to settle where you liked.  There was an obligation to register for Residencia if you stayed longer than 90 days, but it was never really enforced.  Failure to register was an Administrative offence only, punishable by a fine, but it was rarely, if ever, pursued.

That of course has now changed radically, and overstaying as a TCN can get a person doing it not only fined, but banned from the entire Schengen for a period - all 26 countries.
