Firstly I would like to thank the people who run this site and all the people who take their time ask questions and reply I find it a great help and insightful. I'm 61 and single and live in the North West of England work full time and earn a below average salary. I'm hoping to retire when I'm 64 and up to now Mojacar is where I want to relocate to. I will fund this by selling my home in the UK and buying cash, I will of course be totally funding the first two years from savings before I can draw my state pension at 66 (don't start be on that subject) I'm not looking at buying a car as I can't justify or afford the expense. To carry on living in the UK I would either have to carry on working well past my retirement age to be able to own my car and my house and have 1 holiday a year or I would have to downsize considerably and to a different and not so good neighrbourhood , plus put up with the awful climate which gets me down. It would be great to know if there are people who have been in a similar position as myself, made the move and how they are getting on, what obticles they have come across if any, how they have settled in etc.

Best regards

Sandra

Hi there Sandra

I too am single and am looking to relocate too. Not sure what part of Spain yet though. Mojacar is on my list but I am also looking at other Villages. Good on you for making the move on your own. I have met quite a few single people out there when I went over a couple of weeks ago. So you will be fine there :)

Hi, many thanks for the email. It’s quite daunting doing a move abroad on ones own but I’m sure plenty of people do. I just wanted to reach out to other single people who have done it or in the process. Plus of course find areas where as a single person it would be easy to fit in and make friends.

Yes. It's good to find out and maybe make some friends before the move. I only stayed 3 nights as it was knd of more a business trip to see if I could work (run workshops) there. My sister speaks Spanish so she came. And because of her we met a LOT of people. She's a talker :) and she asks everyone for names. So you get to know many by name. I found it important :) do you speak Spanish?

When I went in May and heard English people in a bar etc I would ask if they are on holiday or living there and get their opinion on the area and explain my plans for the future. Most people are happy to help. I don't speak Spannish but that's something I want to start learning in 2020 at night school. I think it's important to try and speak the language it's the polite thing to do.

Hi Sandra good for you. Mojacar is lovely but during the summer months is soooh busy with tourists. We came to Spain 2 years again and rented in Garrucha which is not far from Mojacar.Garrucha is lovely everywhere walkable so being without a car would not be a problem, also has a lovely port.  There is a bus service there as well. Gets busier in summer but nowhere near as busy as Mojacar. There are restaurants and bars plus supermarket and shops all walkable. Hope this helps and do learn Spanish it helps. Jan

Our taxi driver said in summer it takes an hour or longer to drive along beach as there are so many tourists. The tourist information emailed me and they said there are 14.000+ tourists in july/august alone. That's a lot. Depends on what you looking for. I personally missed little square's with cafes. We had to take a number of taxis to get around and look at areas. I loved sitting at Dulce Vita right by the water. And yes, learning Spanish is a must as when we move to a different country it's polite and makes us more part of the whole. I'm German and live in the UK. So speaking English was a priority. And now I'm thinking of leaving after 38 years 😎

Thanks for your messages. I took a bus ride to Garrucha and also to Vera. Yes I have been warned regarding how busy Mojacar gets in the peak summer months, I suppose once you are living there these busy periods are something you learn to live with and if possible stay away from, its all swings and roundabouts I suppose :-) The English can be very lazy when it comes to learning another language :-)

Hi Sandra,

Spain is a wonderful country with so much to do. Properties inland are not only cheaper but generally larger. I live up in the mountains about an hour away from the coast, which gives me the tranquillity but never too far from entertainment. I have found the English speaking people in the villages always very helpful and kind. I decided to buy a new car when I first arrived and to give you an idea of budget, 3 bed house plus furniture and white goods together with car and all fees etc approx 80.000 euro. The roads are really good with little traffic. I find the heat on the coast too much and for too long; in my area (Chirivel) its a comfortable 25-about 30 in the summer. with if you are lucky snow at Christmas.

Good luck with the move if this is the route for you.

Paul

Thank you Paul for your message. You made me smile when you said "with if you are lucky snow at Christmas". I've seen enough snow in my lifetime to not bother if I ever see it again :-)
