Thats a fairly broad question, but the easiest answer is try and at least get Residencia before December 2020. After that, the requirements to obtain residency in Spain become much MUCH more difficult to circumnavigate, aside from the quadrupled income requirement (27.000€ per annum per person income), the actual requirements for maintaining that residency preclude any ability to spend more than 1 accumulated year in a 5 year period outside Spain. As it stands at the moment, to obtain Residencia you need to only show 9.050 € in a bank account for a partnership or 5.300 € if a single person. On top of that, you can spend 1 day short of 6 months of the year outside Spain and still maintain Residencia.
Long story short - get in before December 2020 or face the same challenges as anyone else coming from a country outside the EU

The information on income requirement comes from Extranjeria. After the end of the transition period, UK nationals will need to enter via the General Immigration Regime and apply not for Residencia, but for a Tarjeta Identificación Extranjero - a foreigners identity card. In this way UK Nationals will be treated the same as US, Australian, South African nationals.
What nobody really knows at the moment is how those of us who obtained Residencia prior to December 2020 will be processed; whether that be by declaratory system and merely retain green cards, or apply for a “special” TIE that has on it that we are entitled to rights pursuant to Withdrawal Agreement.
But as I said, that is only for those that gain Residency prior to December 2020. After that date, UK nationals are treated no differently from any other third country national.

Short answer: until you are resident in Spain, you cannot apply for Residencia. It’s a fairly straightforward(ish) process, but you MUST be in the country as you have to appear in person and provide a certificado de Empadronimiento to prove you are residing here.

Hola
I'm doing some research on whether it is feasible for me to make a permanent home in Almeria (looking around Mojacar area). Could I please ask for some information:
Can anyone please give me an idea of the living costs to help with my budgeting. I am a single lady hoping to find a 2 bedroom property so I can have friends/family over (initially renting).
I love gardening so am torn between an apartment with the added attraction of being near the coast and communal pool or a property with more space in the Campo (I will be bringing my car). How much 'gardening' can I realistically do given the climate?
Many thanks
Maz

Thank you very much for your helpful replies!
We too were hoping to move to Spain late this year or early next depending if our house sells once property starts moving again. We will have pensions but not €27000 pa pp! Not even close! If as you say that sort of income is required to take up residence from 1.1.21 then do we need to stop looking for a place in the sun.
