We have been coming down to Mojacar for a few years and have a property here. We are thinking of relocating before Brexit comes into effect and will be applying for residency status shortly. I have read that because I am under 65 (I’m 63) I’ll need health insurance in order to do this. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Hi,

If not in receipt of State Pension, disability allowance, etc, then YES. It's.one of.the criteria for Residencia.

EHIC is not sufficient.

Saludos,

Bob and Sandra

Hi Bob and Sandra Thanks for your reply. So currently (pre Brexit) once in receipt of state pension you no longer need private insurance? Is that right? Andy

Hi,

Yep. You apply & receive an S1 form from DWP which confirms to.the Spanish Social Security system that you have health cover.

Check with the DWP website & also CAB org Spain for substantive info.

I.retired at 55ex-Army but was covered by Disability Allowance so could process for Residencia. Things so different in 2003.

Best Wishes

Bob and Sandra

There is another way, which is ‘autónomo’; which is achieved by a) gaining employment via a contract, and your employer pays into the state system on your behalf or b) registering as self employed and paying autónomo yourself. It’s the equivalent of Nat Insurance on the Uk. Either of these routes will enable you to access the health service.

The final route is as you say via Private Health Insurance.

Regards
