Hello all, Been looking for a nice smaller village to move into from the UK, in about 12 months time. Like the look and size of Chirivel as well as the location. However for the size I was surprised to see so many homes there are for sale in the area. Is there a high turn over of people for any main reason that any one knows.

Looking forward to connecting with any one on this subject.

There are a few people I know who have put their houses up for sale in the area because they wanted to return to the UK for either family or health reasons.

I should add that I am aware of a couple of defaults on mortgages as well, which has resulted in the houses being put on the market for sale

Thank you for your reply, it's just as have been planning for the last 5 years to retire to Spain, and I am now having second thoughts due to Britex and posts I have seen. And was wondering if people are all moving back for any inside knowledge reasons. As if we moved out, we would never be able to afford to move back. So would love some feed back with the pros and cons. As a smaller community was what we were aiming for. Don't fancy a typical holiday destination to live near to. Also any tips on home buying would also be welcomed from people who have made the move.

I don't know anyone who is moving back because of Bexit. Most people including myself don't think that Brexit will affect expats living in Spain

One thing that I would strongly advise is for you to rent in an area and get a feel for it before buying.

When buying, make sure that

1  the property is fully legal

2 you select an independent lawyer and not one suggested by the agent

3 you negotiate a reduction in the asking price

You might look at Urcal village outside Huercal-Overa, more expats than Chirivel but it's not oppressive. Closer to other places also...

Hi have you found somewhere yet? We bought a house in the next village to Chirivel called El Contador and it's beautiful! All you can hear are the birds singing. The locals are so friendly and always happy to see you. There is a large hotel within walking distance that has live music and great food. Large supermarkets about 15 minutes drive away in Baza but we have the food vans coming to the village daily. There is a large open air swimming pool again about 15 minutes drive with slides and smaller pools for little ones. There are a few houses for sale there.

Hi Sarah, we are in the process of buying a house on Calle Aire in El Contador, good to know bits about the village, can’t wait to get down there!! The peace and quiet is just what we are looking for. It won’t be a full time move till at least next year but hopefully we can use it for a few holidays before then.

Hi Austin and Trev

Lovely to hear from you. You will love the village. Is your house on the square? We are going in October and can't wait to get back! We intend to live there in a few years. How's your Spanish? Might be worth learning if you can as the locals are very friendly and chat away to you! If it's peace and quiet you want you have chosen the best place! They do have things going on occasionally. They had a 3 day event going on in the square where they set up a bar, stage and open air restaurant. They had singers on until 3am ( the Spanish know how to party) and when it was all over you could hear a pin drop!  You will also hear the occasional horn bleeping but that's just various sellers bring fresh produce like bread, fish or fruit as many people in the village don't drive. There is a 24 hour petrol station just outside the village if you run out of anything. If you have any questions my email address is [email protected]

We do various things when we visit (apart from chilling) We enjoy a trip to Mojacar where we visit restaurant Los Lucas ( run by two lovely English guys shown on TVs new life in the sun). We also love Granada, Velez Rubio and Velez Blanco where you will also find a stunning castle and a huge Olympic size pool, kids pool, with bar, restaurant where you can take some chairs and spend the whole day.

The main supermarkets/ shops are in Baza. They also have a plumbing shop, furniture and electrical shops and a shop a bit like B&Q. Anyway enough of me chatting!

Get in touch if need help with anything

Sarah

Hi Sarah

Thanks for all the info. The house is on Calle Aire just above the square. We have been a few times during the day and love it, traditional but close to essentials like supermarkets etc. We didn’t want to be near the coast or in an English area if you know what we mean.

We had a couple of nights, very windy, down there in March staying at the hotel by the motorway, very quiet but it was Monday and Tuesday. Went in the little bar off the square, is there another bar on the square?

We are both looking forward to moving down there once our pub is sold.Hoping to get a couple of rescue pups and get out in the countryside.

Both need to start on learning Spanish like you say.

Anyway thanks for the advice and if you think of anything else please pass it on and hopefully we can meet up for a natter.

Take care

Austin and Trevor
