“Can I get a cut, blow-dry and a course in climate change  please?

That could be the request in Hairdressers across Ireland under a government scheme that aims to train hairdressers  to get conversations going with their clients about climate change oversee by University College Cork.

No more " what do u think of the new series of the " Handmaid's Tail" or "how's your son getting on in Australia" . No it will b all about stopping cows farting and spending money u don't have on an E.V car.

Naturally,  this one is being funded by Irish taxpayers to the tune €63,000  allocated by Research Ireland to train hairdressers to talk to their customers about Climate Change.

They really are never short of ideas on how to waste tax money

True that, but it may be nice not to be asked are you not working today?

There is also the fact that you can spout whatever conspiracy theory you believe in as you have a captive audience, and they opened the door to serious subjects, so instead of talking about where you're going on your holiers you can pontificate to your heart's content.

Keep in mind that they could make a hames of your hair if you piss them off

I’m shocked,  I’ve Never heard anything so stupid in my 67 years !   The Government is telling Hairdressers What To Talk about.    Frightening too.

some useful context:  this is an experiment in communication, to see if, and how, important community hubs like hairdressing/barbershops might be useful in helping get out crucially important messages about the unfolding climate catastrophe...to see if they could act something like focus groups that are used universally for communication planning, from adverts for beer to political manifestos. Four areas in Ireland that are predicted to be heavily impacted as the climate changes become more intense will be chosen, barbers/hairdressers in each area--who volunteer to participate--will learn ways to respond in conversations that include climate change, such as talking about how climate change is likely to upend life in those areas, and actions that could be undertaken to prevent the worst effects. They will then be asked to report back on what 'worked', or not, just like any focus group would.   The point is that--across Ireland as a whole--the cost of managing the catastrophic impacts of climate change will be in the many billions of euros range, and those huge costs can be vastly reduced if the population better understands the issues, and how to deal with them -- now rather then too late.  In this context spending 63k now, to save 63 billion later, is a wise investment.  The training will mostly involve educating the participants as to the reality of the climate crisis, as to causes, history, predicted impacts, and things that can be done to minimise the impact -- it is already much too late to prevent disruption.  And yes, those issues include farting cows because as silly as it sounds, it is a significant part of the problem--something like 15% of greenhouse gases come from cow farts (and belches, they do a lot of both), that can rather easily be reduced.   Gov is not instructing people what to say, but looking for ways to get this critically important information out there. There is literally nothing more important.

I asked a friend of mine who owns a hairdressers what she thought of this initiative

Her reply was 1 word beginning with B and ending in X.

I notice in your very well put together post you make no mention of  China and their coal power stations or India's waste burning which makes our cows farts pale in2 insignificance.

So, instead of TV campaigns , and socials.    They count on every person having a hairdo ? I don’t, My dogs do though ,maybe they should include groomers 😊. With all the tech nowadays it’s a bit archaic to me !   If hairdressers start being “intellectual”  ,some might be put off ,feeling not clever enough to go to the hairdressers lol.  It still sounds daft to me ,but what do I know 🤷‍♀️

your point as to China, India, and oh btw the US (also a leader in climate destruction) is well made, but journeys and single steps... I assume (hope) the training will include what are the worst offenders, and that would surely include coal, and China, US, India... as well as steps they can take to help rather than harm...   I wonder if you could in turn report back, in time, what sort of feedback your friend might encounter in the hairdressing network if this experiment actually comes about...  good, bad or indifferent it is an unusual approach...and it does come with a slight whiff that the university will have to take note of-- the bad guys have always used these sorts of routes to plant propaganda, and to sniff out suspected 'thems'.  The uni might publish info as it goes on.
