Hi everyone, my husband and I are looking to move from Marbella where we have lived for 2 1/2 years having moved from New Zealand. Can anyone let me know where they enjoy living full time and recommend for exploring with a view to purchase? We’re looking for 3b’room, 2 bath villa with garden, pool, preferably a garage, we have 2 small dogs. And we’re reasonably fit and healthy 66 year olds. Thank you for any help. Jane

Hi Jane. The Almanzora Valley is a beautiful area. If you want to live near lots of Brits there's Arboleas or Alfoquia or if you prefer more Spanish areas those abound as well. There's good shopping and 24/7 medical services in Albox and Huercal Overa and the coast is only about 40 minutes away. We're very well served with bars and restaurants, there's live music at several venues there are Spanish cultural events  and    fiestas abound in the summer . The scenery is very beautiful especially in spring when the many huertas are carpeted in spring flowers. I would definitely recommend spending a few days here to explore the area from Cantoria to Arboleas, Alfoquia, Albox and towards Oria and Chirivel.  Andrea at Dream Homes Almeria is very reputable agent and I've heard good reports about Holme's for Homes ss well. Happy hunting!

Thanks so much. This is really helpful to know. Masses for us to consider, places to explore and agent recommendations. Thank you

There are a lot of fun books about the joys and achievements of doing up wonderful old Spanish properties, but these were written some time ago.  Planning regulations have become very strict, if not immoveable now, with drones flying to make sure they are adhered to.  No good thinking 'I can put a swimming pool there' ot 'just build on another en- suite elsewhere'.  There are lots of houses for sale, so choose one where these thing have already been done and you can just have fun painting the inside walls the colour you like!

Maybe rent for a bit in the area you choose and see how it feels: often there are properties available  via chat in local bars, learning Spanish is SO useful- and get a good lawyer.

Hi Jane. Just wondering why you're choosing to move from Marbella? I'm considering renting in Marbella and Mojacar for 3 months each just to see which we prefer.

I'm interested to hear what you thought of living there for 2.5 yrs. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Jennifer, we’ve loved living here and our reasons for moving are all about moving out of an urbanisation with all the restrictions of rules and regulations that at times I feel are more about people who live life looking for the worst in people. It’s definitely been eye opening as I’m Vice President of the urbanisation…time to move, then the road here is our other reason A7 is often blocked by accident and I can’t get home or anywhere else! I also think it’s a very transient place so I’m looking to move where people actually LIVE not holiday. Marbella is great, has been a pleasure to live here, but I’d like my own garden and pool for a change! Do you know where you want to rent yet? All the very best to you.

Not really, I've bern to Estepona, and I'd like to see Mijas and Nerja.

I really like Mojacar and surrounding areas as I've spent time there and always enjoyed it.
