Hope the move works out for you Lesley , we are suffering from Arthritus and have found a property in  Oria we really love so glad to here that the sun does make the pain of arthritus more managable if not medically proven , but have lived in many countries due to working in the Oil Industry so if my company lets me make the move we will soon be on that plane lol

Thanks for getting in touch, Voss Homes is one of the agents I am looking with and they are showing me 4 villas.

Someone else mentioned the dames, which I would be interested in as it appears there are many friends to make out there.

Also dog fostering sounds good as I wouldn't want my own when I first move, maybe when I'm settled.

I had a hip replacement 18 months ago and now it appears I might have to have a knee replacement, just waiting on the x ray. One of the reasons to come to the Spain is the winter sun  as I have mild arthritis and when I have spent time there in the Winter I don't feel the pain that I do here.

Hopefuuly we can meet in the near future

Best wishes lesley

I can vouch for the Spanish health system being first rate here. Free car parking, excellent care and after care though in most cases you'll need a translator of which there are many and at good hourly rates.

Hi Lesley, I run a singles group, its not a dating group just friends, but if you met someone and formed a relationship great. We are for ladies and gents who are single and in their vintage years. We meet on a Wednesday lunchtime for lunch and a chat and discuss where and what we would like to do as a group. Its a way of getting out there and making new friends. One you are here you can contact me and I can let you know where we are meeting next  [email protected].

Good luck with your house search, you are choosing the right areas, if you need help with anything just drop me an email, or contact me via facebook Merilyn May.

See you soon

Hi Lesley, You're in your early 60's; I guarantee you won't be around for another 60 years (Sorry!). If you buy your off-spring will be delighted with you and they can use your Spanish property long after you've gone or even sell it and enjoy your spending more. I bet you are thinking "That crazy...

... cocky Paddy is on here again putting the frighteners on innocent Brits."

My opinion:- Rent, rent, rent. You can spend as much time here as you wish and there'll always be England if things are not up to your mark. Keep your hard earned money for your own everyday use.

I know I'm going to get slated for this post, but you can argue with everything but you can't argue with truth.

Yes i would suggest that you at first rent some very good rental properties around Arbaleose and Albox area's and monthly rental fees can be very reasonable depends on the area that would be to your requirements

Good luck with your new venture.

Albox Arbaleose Zurgena Alfaquer and the surrounding areas

Best of luck for the future.

Thanks Merilyn, I will take you up on the offer when I move as making new friends is on my priority list. I will be out later in the year but can't say when  as I have to have a knee operation first and haven't got a date for it yet.

Looking forward to meeting everyone, see you soon

Buying is easy.  Selling much much more difficult.  So renting is a sensible option because you can scope out the area and easily move if you don't like the house/area/neighbours etc, The buying costs are really high as well so best to be sure before you buy

Hi Lesley. Around a year ago, my wife and I were exactly where you are right now. Here is how it was for us. Retirement looming and the inability to afford to live in our then current home in Essex. Only a two bed bungalow, but crippling council tax, energy costs and of course, running a car was no go on our pensions.

We spent from January until September researching a move to Spain and the more we looked into all aspects, the easier the decision to move here became.

I introduced myself on this forum and was treated to the same negativity by Matthew as you have just read. Now I dont dismiss his comments out of hand, but what he cant possibly know are people's circumstances and he is utterly wrong to post blanket comments without some detailed input from the people he is addressing.

My missus and I sold a property in the south east of England for a lot of money. We settled all our debts, bought a fabulous villa near Arboleas and also treated ourselves to a very nice car as well. AND not only do we have a decent lump of money left, but we also receive more than enough to cover the amazingly low cost of living. In our specific circumstances, why would we ever want to waste money renting Matthew.

Anyway Lesley, back to you. Most of the good advice has already been offered. Make sure you get a good lawyer, etc. Its commonsense really. You wouldn't DIY your conveyancing in England, so why would you do it here in Spain.

The main advice from me is invest in a couple of weeks here in Almeria for a scouting trip. You know the type of life you're looking for so have a good look around the province to ensure that you get exactly what you want.

Lastly, a comment about Arboleas. My other half and I have settled here in no time and feel completely at home. That's because all the people around here are so nice and so helpful. It's a wonderful place to live. What may be a negative for you would be a lack of nightlife in the immediate area and it would be very helpful indeed if you drive and intend to add a car to your shopping list. As we treasure a bit of peace and quiet, the tranquil area suits us very well. Obviously, it's not everyone's cup of tea.

It's very easy to overload people with info, so that's my cue to shut up and leave you to give it your utmost thought. Very last words. Scouting trip crucial. End of the day, the only opinion that matters is yours.

Best of luck. Lee
