I am just in the process of moving to Huercal-Overa and the deal should go through in September. As Matthew says it is important to think about what you want - Apartment/Town House/Villa/Pool or no pool/Coastal or Inland. High British population or more Spanish. How high are you prepared to go in...

... terms of altitude as it gets cold in Winter (We stayed the other side of Huercal-Overa for 3 months and that convinced us not to stay there as it was cold in the winter and a bit remote +750 metres. If you are looking at a particular area then narrow down your search on the Place in the Sun Website with your specific criteria. If you are looking inland then Huercal-Overa has a good hospital and facilities but we recommend the areas of San Francisco and El Saltador, we also like Cantoria and Almonzora but you are getting further from the coast. If you want a Spanish Solicitor then ask on here as people know who to avoid, We use Maria Moroto in Vera and she is excellent and was recommended on this site. I agree with Matthew - Rent for 6 months before buying and use them 6 months to see where you want to buy - It will take that long to find somewhere and buy it

Oh yes Maria Moroto in Vera  every time!

Arboleas wouldn't be my cup of tea nor would Albox but each to their own. Arboleas has a very high ex-pat community if that is what you are looking for, you won't need those Spanish lessons :)

Where are you Jimh? as we have never been to the area it is a difficult decision, the dream is, a spanish village with a mix of locals and ex pats where we can make friends and get involved with the community x

I’m in Ireland- but I have bought in Huercal Overa between El Saltador and San Francisco - we spent three months staying 6km beyond Santa Marie de Nieva but it is too high up and gets cold in Winter (we saw a 6 degree centigrade increase just driving down to Huercal Overa) - Agents insisted on showing us around Arboleas but it’s a collection of enclaves around a small town with small plots and lots of houses. We went to Albox and never really liked the town so discounted properties there. We had a budget of €300k and looked at 10 or 12 properties - we were tempted by one in Cantoria but we couldn’t agree a price- we saw a lovely house in Almonzora but the land around it was too steep which is probably why it has been on the market so long. Get a base and explore the towns and villages and local markets - Huercal Overa has a nice square- a new mercadona supermarket opens soon and although I don’t want to use it the hospital has a great reputation- I wouldn’t consider buying without renting first
