We got our Spanish solicitor - really important to get a good one - to write our Spanish will which simply states that our U.K. will takes precedence over the Spanish will. Didn’t cost much at all and simplifies our inheritance wishes.  Mind you, must check that this is still the case post...

Thank you x I am so grateful for all your advice on this forum, I look forward to the day we come out Almeria x we have decided to speak to our managers to see if we are allowed 1 month leave in October and we will rent in area that we feel we would like to be and look around the areas x

It is definitely a good idea not to burn your uk bridges as your application for residency may be rejected as ours has been.  We’ve done nothing wrong, we thought we had everything in hand with a really good lawyer but unfortunately her staff were not up to the job in hand and completely messed up. Heartbroken but resigned now to the 90 day rule as we have still kept our other home.

Oh no, I'm so sorry, we have been advised by Gov.com to check their website for a lawyer, is that what you did, or did you find your own?

Just reapply using a better lawyer.

Do not give up your dream of living in Spain.

Hi just looking through the posts and noted Mathew's helpful reply.Im also considering the move and interestingly noted selling your UK home and the tax liability? I'm assuming that once you have obtained residency which I'd coincide with my purchase in Spain your going to be stung twice a)UK sale b)Spanish purchase. In essence are you saying leave it a fiscal year prior to purchasing in Spain? Surely if you've obtained residency and not 90 day visa you may be liable to tax on UK home sale, so as an example let's assume your selling at 280k in UK and purchasing at say 100k in Spain approx how much is your tax liability assuming you coincide the two ie exchange simultaneously. Wrongly I'd assumed it seems that selling UK wouldn't incur liability if you introduced your capital and then coincide residency and purchase in Spain. Therefore only having taxes to pay on either your new property or re sale.Yes I'm doing my swot analysis Mathew labelled due diligence.Clearly if overlooked or poorly advised its a possible gamechanger ouch!

Spanish tax will depend on whenabouts in the Spanish Tax year you sell your UK house.

And your age: if you are over 65 and you are selling your prime residence then capital gains tax does not apply, whatever time of year the transaction takes place.

Hi.  I have read the responses above and it seems we did everything differently to the advice above.  We started at the Manchester "Place in the Sun" roadshow, researched areas on the internet and came to Spain for a holiday viewing properties from Costa del Sol to Costa Blanca and decided on Vera Playa .  We did everything quickly and moved within months.  We were lucky enough to have a great estate agent and a great lawyer so everything ran smoothly and have enjoyed five years here so far.  Everyone is different and our approach worked for us.  Good luck and message me if you want any information on who we used for our move.

Thank you for your replies they are helpful,  I hope you dont mind if I may give you a little more information on our current situation my husband is 60 and I am 66, we are both working at the moment as health professionals in the NHS so we are unable to take so much leave in one go, so it i...

...sn't possible to rent for 4-5 weeks as we wouldn't be allowed all our leave at one time,  we have spoken to solicitors regarding how much funds we would need, so we would have to continue working until we are ready to move as we know we would be financially secure by that stage. We also have a house to sell, We don't want to rush the move but as you can see time is not on our side, although we are both fit and healthy. We had decided we would book 2 or 3 fortnightly trips to look around the different areas, this summer and next winter with a hope to move next summer/winter 2024. The other problem we seem to have is flights, there dosn't appear to be flights from Manchester in the winter to Almeria.  I am sorry for being a nuisance but it is a dream and a big step to make and any advice is greatly received and appreciated as we don't know anyone personally who has made this move and it's quite daunting knowing where to start.

Thank you so much

We fly in to Almeria....we live in Los Gallardos, near Mojacar. We leave our car at Umbrella parking when we pop back to UK. Almeria flights are so expensive. We pay about 20/ 25 euros a trip. It is a 2 and a half our journey on excellent roads..... Easy airport to pick up friends etc.... We also use Maria Morroto and Esther in Vera Playa..... by the roundabout..... they have done 2 house purchases for us and 2 wills....she is brilliant!  Good luck.

I am just in the process of moving to Huercal-Overa and the deal should go through in September. As Matthew says it is important to think about what you want - Apartment/Town House/Villa/Pool or no pool/Coastal or Inland. High British population or more Spanish. How high are you prepared to go in terms of altitude as it gets cold in Winter (We stayed the other side of Huercal-Overa for 3 months and that convinced us not to stay there as it was cold in the winter and a bit remote +750 metres. If you are looking at a particular area then narrow down your search on the Place in the Sun Website with your specific criteria. If you are looking inland then Huercal-Overa has a good hospital and facilities but we recommend the areas of San Francisco and El Saltador, we also like Cantoria and Almonzora but you are getting further from the coast. If you want a Spanish Solicitor then ask on here as people know who to avoid, We use Maria Moroto in Vera and she is excellent and was recommended on this site. I agree with Matthew - Rent for 6 months before buying and use them 6 months to see where you want to buy - It will take that long to find somewhere and buy it
