Hi, cant help but feel a mix of trepidation and excitement in your replies lol.

As the Nike ad says, "just do it", partner bought a villa with a pool early last year and we moved in late March, just 20 minutes up the road from Arboleas/La Alfoquia in a sleepy village called Urcal, been featured on A place in the Sun a few times, as has the local bar. It's a haven of peace and tranquility with a really nice mix of Brits and Spanish.

We have the local hub the bar, a doctors surgery, school, corner shop style supermarket and everyone gets on great, help is never far away, and as the year gets going there are plenty of suggestions flying around for things to do from bbq's, curry evenings, bowling etc, there are quite a few really nice restaurants offering most every cuisine you could hope for, including great fish n chips in La Foquia !

The majority of meals out run to around €15 a head, coffee is cheap as chips, as is good wine, theres nothing like having a walk around any of the local markets then having tapas and a drink and just watching the world go by lol.

Fruit and veg from the local markets is cheap, fresh and plentiful, we have strawberries on the stalls even !!

We're 40 something minutes from the coastal towns and beaches of Villaricos, San Juan de las Terreros, Garrucha, Mojacar etc, we are just 7 minutes from the A7/E15 motorway, 12 minutes from the local nearest town of Huercal Overa, around an hour or just over to the airports at Almeria in the South and Murcia to the North, Alicante is just under an hour.

Arboleas was our first look see mainly because there seemed to be so much choice at great prices but maybe it was just our overenthusiastic guide on the weekend we came on a viewing trip but we found clutches of villas in remote areas and realised from the signs that "Arboleas" per se covers a huge area. Partners friend who she has holidayed with over the last 4 or 5 years found, viewed and recommended this villa for her and the more we looked, the more we loved the place.

Some days we dont even take the lock off the front gate and just potter about the villa, a double plot still needs to be looked after, friends whove been over have loved the ability to go shopping in the morning and jump in the pool in the afternoon, and now we know what to do with the pool heater we can extend "pool use" both before and after what seems to be regarded as "pool season".

Take your time looking round, gather loads of spec sheets, we never had any objections to our taking photographs with cameras, tabkets etc, an agenrs spec sheet only tells part of the story, having boots on the ground means so much more.

Utilities arent much difference to the UK, gas is usually butane for house fires and portable heaters, water is slightly cheaper but council tax is really really cheaper, partner had a 3 bed one bath house back in Essex and paid around £1450 a year, roughly £200 plus a month, here for a 3 bed two bath double plot with a pool she just paid around €240 for the full year !!

The roads are generally very good, motorways excellent, avoid places like Mojacar in the summer months as they get jam packed, nowhere to park and full beaches.

You'll find cars and furniture expensive so if you intend buying any try and source them in the UK and bring them. Petrol is about the same as in the UK, diesel a bit cheaper.

As above just keep asking questions. Someone will have an answer lol. Most of all, if your almost at retirement age its great to put your feet up, lovely even now in mid January wakibg up to clear blue skies and warm sunshine. Temps drop as the sun goes down around 5 ish.

Hi to anybody that may read this.

We live in England at present ,house on market and hoping to to move this year. We are coming in March to check some areas out just to confirm where we might like to live . I'm sure we wont get all our answers on this visit but it's a start.

we are new to the forum . We are scared but also excited  about the big move so any reassurance will be gratefully accepted. We will be retiring there. Also hope to make some nice friends .

Kay and John

Ps.hope someone answers me as iv noticed in the short time iv been on not all messages get a reply .I understand maybe no one has the answer to them.

Hi & welcome to "The Forum",

Good luck in your impending move, probably laced with a lot of in-trepidation.

You will receive a lot of great advice, but you will also get Sarcasm, unfunny wit, illegal, bad and some downright stupid idiotic advice. What I will say is this, NEVER take just the one bit of advice, ask the same question in many forums to get a better overview.

My wife, I and 7 children & 7 dogs have been for just over a year now, our needs differ from yours but essentially the logistics are the same when buying a house and moving.

I agree with everything Bob L has said, do your home work on all areas, we wanted to live in a Spanish village but did not want to be part of the "Expat" brigade and live in a british village in Spain, we want to integrate into Spanish life, we wanted our children to be bi-lingual (English & Spanish) as I am (English & Australian).....JOKE !!, so we decided to choose a village that was 98% Spanish,

the downside to buying a village house.

The houses are generally older in construction and the art of hanging shelves or pictures takes on a whole new skill requirement, the word "PLUM" is not in the Spanish repertoire, Older houses are usually colder in winter and cooler in summer (if you use your shutters in the right way), if you get an older house ask about the waste water and wether its a Pozo-Negro or newer septic tank and also its location, some houses are not on mains water, ours isn't, we get our water from our farmer and its passed through 6 filters for drinking and 3 for bathing, our water is FREE (this may not always be the case), we pay only for the electrics to pump it into our resevoir. Electrics are Dodgy, they go of with no notice- sometimes a breif moment, othjers 2 or 3 hours, if you have a computer or any expensive electricals -a surge protection device would be useful.

the upside to buying a village house.

The british communities are never far away and are easily accessible so there is no reason to HAVE to live in one to reap its benefits.

Learn the language quicker,

Learn how the Spanish do things rather than finding a British hack of doing the same thing.

create local friends

Spanish people are amazingly community lead, they will be very "Standoffish" at first and you will have to make the moves first, make an effort to do this and they will be a lot more welcoming.

Buying a house in an expat community - upside

? I can't say what that's like because I came here to experience Spain not "Little Britain"

Buying a house in an expat community - downside

? I can't say what that's like because I came here to experience Spain not "Little Britain"

Spain has its frustrations but its advantages far supersede its frustrations.

When I came over Bob L was a lifesaver, to this day he still drops his little nuggets of wisdom, he has proved to be a great source of knowledge since then he and his wife Sandra have become great friends too, friends that we only hope we give back too as much as we receive from them.

I wish you the best of Luck in finding your little bit of Spain

Hi Maxine

We are in Mojacar Playa half way between the Parce Comercial and Mercadona, everything we need is within walking distance and should we want or need to go further afield and not use the car the bus routes and service are excellent.

Cheers

Pete
