I just thought I would share this with the forum, we are renting from a couple who live in England, elderly, for obvious reasons they cannot travel. The problem is because of Brexit thier bank account has been frozen as they don't live here, heres our dilemma we have been paying bills into the account. Now Endessa have cut our electricity as they couldn't access the account, we have had no electricity for the past week. We have been working with our estate agent who has done everything he can to help with no luck as yet. We really do not want to move as with current situation we don't want all the hassle pluse we have all our own furniture, ( house was unfurnished) we are still hopeful that the situation can be resolved soon.

I really want to let others interested in rentals to check this out before you rent, we never anticipated this situation.

There is absolutely no way Brexit is the reason for a closure of a bank account. We have friends who have property that they rent out here and have accounts and nothing has happened. I would ask more questions.

We've asked as many questions as we could, so has estate agents solicitor.

(Spanish solicitor)

As the person is no longer residing here, eg: same as in UK, Barclays close accounts with no British address.

It is true, many banks if you can’t supply an English account will shut your account now under Brexit.  hSBC seem to be ok.  Lots of info on Google btw

Nothing like this concerning the Spanish banks would surprise me - I've never come across such institutions with the ability to invent their own rules by the minute.

can't you just pay the electric bill straight to Endessa?  How do you receive the bills?   do you mean that their english account has been closed or the Spanish one?

The Spanish account has been closed, all the bills are paid through to the Spanish account. Endessa have all the evidence to prove bills have been paid. Our estate agent has threatened legal action through solicitor, and all we've got is, it will be on in next 24 hrs, which has turned into a week!

At this point, we will have to consider moving. We'd rather not, but.......

Friends of our in Torrevieca had similar issues, although not as long. They were with Endessa too. I just wanted to let anyone know that this situation is problematic now post Brexit. Our estate agent dealing with 3 other people like us.

I have a Barclays account in UK and that hasn't been closed.  I would think it is the spanish bank but cant think why.  I assume you have contacted the owners?  As for bills they usually arrive after the  money is taken from the account by  direct debit.  Have you actually been into the endesa office?  You might need an interpreter.  But its worth a try snd cheaper than a lawyer.  We also rent but although in our landlords name we had our bank account put on the invoices and have never had a problem.

Hi Lyn

First of all thank you for taking the time to reply. I don't know your personal circumstances all I can tell you is that If you do not have a UK address Barclays Bank Will close your account. If however you have a UK address it remains open. My husbands account has been closed after notification from Bank Manager in London. His sister who lives in Italy also had her bank account closed after notification from Barclays. She lives in France. They had sold both houses in UK, so have no UK addresses.

If your bank is not aware that you live in an EU country.... They would have no reason to close your account.

If you go through messages you will that we have tried all that you suggest. For now, all is in the hands of Endessa gods 🙄
