We came out for 3 weeks in March and are now in lockdown.  We are in 70's and have some medical issues. The airlines and government have abandoned us although I am emailing my MP on an almost daily basis. Thoughts on how to get back - buy a car and drive back? How difficult to buy a car here now - impossible? Can't hire a car to take back to UK?  Have a friend who drove back and no problems and only 5 cars on Eurotunnel but he had his own van, took his own food and water and a bottle(!!) so didn't use toilets. Hire a private jet - £12,000 for a 6 seater - share with someone and how long before this is a possibility, even though it would decimate finances, if we get stuck here for months? Which is worst option?

Also flights from Barcelona. You could get the train to there.

looking here

https://www.autoeurope.com/travel-tips/rental-car-age-requirements/

there is no real upper age limit on car hire, although you may have to leave it in france, and then travel as foot passenger then car hire in UK

or looking on europacar you can get a car hire and leave at Madrid airport for apx 100 euros

✈️🚅 Some information I found today on Facebook in my group. Anyway, you have to check the figures by yourself.

We came out in December and to be honest we feel safer here than we would in the UK. We have had no problems getting our medications with just our repeat UK prescriptions for a nominal cost, but if you have your EHIC s you should have no trouble getting medications or treatment under the reciprocal agreement which will remain in place until the end of the year. We have booked with Brittany ferries for May 19th as we have our vehicle here, but it may still be cancelled as our April one was. We have to wait and see. Best of luck whatever you decide to do.

We got back to the UK last night. After realising that easyJet were not interested in fulfilling their legal obligation to fly us home and the FCO just churn out the advice to get a commercial flight home and we could be abandoned in Spain for months, we decided to try and get back some other way. We wished we had realised sooner that we were on our own and no-one was being helpful, including the car hire company (Goldcar)  who charged us 1200 euros when we extended hire car from 27 march to 8 April when we had no idea of when we could get a flight as we didn't return the car on 30 March although we agreed the extension by phone. They insisted we return the car to Almeria airport on 8 April which we did and then had to hire another car from another company and get them to deliver to the airport so we could get back to the apartment.

We booked a flight from Gibraltar yesterday and hired a car for the day (that was a nightmare which would take too long to explain), drove down in 3/5 hours, got to the airport. checked in, sat in departure lounge to find that the plane had been diverted to Malaga because of weather conditions. Put us on a coach to Malaga and we took off 3 hours later and landed in UK at 9.30 p.m.

We are home, can order food shopping online with vulnerable person slots, have family within 10 mins to drop things off, have large garden and large hospital 1 mile away plus we have vulnerable tenants in a house we rent out to look after. The anxiety and stress of sitting in an apartment with nothing to do and no-one near us who can help was too much to bear so we decided we must get back whatever the cost.
