Hi all, we are pasty English northerners looking to retire in spain in the future.

Are there any areas in southern spain where myself and my wife wont burst into flames during the summer months.

I can probably handle low to mid 30'C and want a place somewhere in the mountains but temps seem to regularly hit 40'C in july / aug.

Could be because Almería has the only European desert.  Place is lovely but does get very hot especially inland.

We currently live on the coast and had high 30's today.  However if you can avoid the silly season (July and August) the weather will be a little kinder.  That said we Brits truly are obsessed with the subject 🥵😎🥵😎

Thanks for your reply, I was hoping there would be a cooler microclimate somewhere.

As we would be emigrating and living in spain year round, avoiding silly season would pose a problem.

Perhaps I need to look elsewhere - sad face

Do go be just the temperatures, the humidity is what you to want worry about. We live at almost 1200mts, and when we go down towards to coast or a low level inland town, it's not the heat that gets you, it's the humidity!

I presume that should read "dont go just by the temps".

I know humidity is a killer -  I was hoping that being up in the mountains at a higher altitude it would be cooler but it appears not, cant find anywhere that stays under 35'C during july/aug

where are you located Puff ?.

Yes you read me right: "I presume that should read "don't go just by the temps"!

We're just above Oria, I guess we've acclimatised to the conditions.

Good hunting

Consider Vélez-Rubio, Vélez- Blanco, Almeria,  Andalusia, Spain, up in the mountains -18 to +39

But seriously Los Alcázares on the Mar Menor in Murcia, the warmest place in Europe in the winter, is much more temperate, with lots of sea breezes +7 to 32, with maybe six days in mid summer above that, that is what you have airconditioning for.

I think you'll find that during the day in the summer, it is hot in Almería even up a mountain.  At night however, the temperature will be much cooler than by the coast so you can have a decent night's sleep at least.  During the day, sea breezes make the beach areas pleasant whilst inland can be baking.  What we learn to do is keep out if the sun and stay in the shade.

As the Spanish do, after a few centuries of learning how to coexist with the climate...   In fact you could try out eating really late and socialising in the lovely cool night air under the blazing stars, don't waste the time sleeping then.  Don't stress yourselves over exact details and times, relax, things will probably happen in the end anyway. Or maybe not, does it really matter?  When it is hot in the middle of the day, find a cool place and have a relaxing sleep- most of the shops will be shut anyway.  Smile, you are in Spain.

Couldn't have put it better myself, Bess!
