Firstly, it is important to know that I am not a Resident of Spain and currently do not have any intention to change that status. Today, while 're-registering' our NIE and passport details with the bank I was informed that very soon the NIE would have to be replaced by a 'green paper' registration form. Please could anyone advise me if they were talking about the TIE? If so, I'm not sure how that would be relevant as I'm not intending to live here permanently and have been paying the Non-Residency Tax for decades. If there is a re-vamp of registration papers, does anyone know if I go to the Foreigners Department, the Gestoria, the police department? Is this something that our solicitor can help with, for example. Any information would be great. Thank you.

No, Green paper is not the TIE, nor is there any “new” registration applicable to Non-Residents.  “Green Card” would probably be a Certificado / Tarjeta de Residencia, only applicable to EU citizens settling in Spain.  It sounds like, as happens all too often, a member of staff has overheard a snippet of something not applicable in your situation, and decided to put their own interpretation on it.  This is not unusual, and you should clarify with the bank - the Manager, preferably, that you are non-resident and have no intention of becoming resident ergo there will be no TIE, Green Card or indeed any other form of registration (including Padrón - if you are non-resident, do NOT go on the Padrón)

As a non-resident, you may be obliged to provide your UK National Insurance number to the bank, but there is no other form of registration required for a non-resident.

To DarioMartin, thank you for you prompt reply clarifying the situation for me. I'll work on the information you have given me. How I wish the UK had obligatory photo ID cards like most other countries, it would make life a lot simpler in many ways.
