Hi,

My wife and I are planning to move to Almeria City in early October. NLV just about approved after a long and fairly costly process. We would apprechiate any advice about renting a flat for one or two years, ideally central, two or more beds with a budget of 750 - 1200 Euros per month, ideally unfurnished. We will also be looking for Spanish classes, we have beginners' Spanish but want to improve. Lots more advice needed but we will wait for that...

Many thanks in advance

Tim

Almeria is a very nice city,I live 100 Kms to the north.Dont use online language courses.I use JSS video classes, the guy is good,he was born in UK but moved here when he was 4.He teaches both ways ,English to Spanish and Spanish to English. He knows the pitfalls!! Also quite amusing. He has school in Alicante and the videos are a reflection of his on site lessons...😁👍🇪🇦🇬🇧

Hi TimB! Hubby & I have just purchased a flat in Almería city, specifically in Zapillo area. Hopefully by mid September the entire process will be completed. This will be our primary home. It was love at first sight with Almería city. We knew  right away it was the place we wanted to make our permanent home. We had been looking for a place walking distance or bus friendly to reach the places for day to day needs. Also to reach hospitals & clinics if needed. Almería is pedestrian friendly. My husband loves  biking  and fishing, Almería city is  perfect for this. Also has a beautiful beach with  beautiful boardwalk with bars and cafés. Perfect for my daily walks.

We've traveled back & forth many times to beautiful Southern Spain (Andalucia región) and as much as we love other cities, Almería city is our choice. It's rustic, affordable, mostly  Spaniards & the food is fresh & delicious. It's also very clean with amazing parks & gardens.

We've lived in Spain since 2016 & are now residents, thank God!! It was very hard to get our NLV, we did it ourselves. It was a long  dramatic process with a happy ending.

You will not have any problem renting in the city with your budget! That's a darn good budget for long term rental  in Almería city. Just get in touch with Buying/Rental Agencies. So many of them.  By the way, I am fluent in Spanish. My husband not. We don't live in Almería at the moment but hoping to move there by end of September. Meanwhile, If I can help, please PM  me. Best wishes.

Micaela

Hi Tim

We moved to Almeria city in September 2020 (just before Brexit) and love it. We are just north of the city and have plentiful bars and restaurants as well as Alcampo almost on our doorstep. I started to learn Spanish before we came out and have continued with two classes a week. I can get by now in most situations as my husband doesn't speak Spanish. There are very few English speakers outside the city so I would definitely recommend improving your Spanish. If you want me to put you in contact with my tutor, you can dm me. Also during Covid I used a language exchange and now have three very good friends in Madrid that I speak to on a weekly basis.

It is really easy to travel around by public transport and we only really use the car to go on trips. We have found everybody very welcoming and they will always try to help if you are struggling with Spanish. I have learned to play padel (in Spanish) and also attend Pilates classes so don't worry if your Spanish is basic. Just have fun and don't be embarrassed if you make mistakes.

I hope you enjoy living in the city and let me know when you are settled and maybe we can all meet up for a beer or coffee. My husband would love some English conversation!!

Hi,

Thanks Biggles, I agree re online courses. Better than nothing but no substitiute for a Spanish speaker. Will check out the video course you mention.

Best,

Tim

Hi Micaela,
We know Almeria City fairly well. We have registered with Idealista and Fotocasa but want more local recommendations for estate agents as we will be looking for something soon after moving in October.
I agree about Almeria being good for walking and public transport. We will have sold the car by the time we move and are thinking about hiring one, occasionally, at least for the first six months. Will think about taking a Spanish driving test after that if the governments are still failing to sort out a license exchange deal.

Best,

Tim

Hi Elaine,

Thanks for that. We are really looking forward to just relaxing in Almeria. We have looked into the Sports Centre near Zapillo and it looks good. Do you know it? Agree re getting about. It is something which appeals to us. We will have sold our car by then and look forward to walking around and getting the occasional bus.

We do need to find somewhere to rent fairly quickly. We are on idealista and fotocasa but are looking for any more local recommendations so that we can hot the ground running when we arrive in early October.  It seems so far but also getting closer!

We would love to meet up. I will send you a dm when we are settled in el Ciudad de Almeria.

Best,

Tim

Thanks for that, but looking to rent at first, and in the CIty of Almeria rather than a drive away. But good luck with your sale.

Tim
