well it looks like my 'Spanish ' bubble has well and truly been burst , I really thought that even post brexit we would be able to move , we had money in the bank to support ourselves,  2 years worth of rent upfront , I would be actively looking to work ASAP, my 18 year old would have enrolled at almeria University,  and part time working, my mum who is retired woukd have been able to relax

But private medical insurance is so expensive!, and the process as a third country national is complicated

We are literally gutted

It's a right mess isn't it! i literally turned my life upside down to get here before the end of 2020, knowing it would be my only realistic option. All the best to you and your family

And of course, actually getting the work permit as a TCN is in itself a mountain to climb.

I am truly truly sorry to hear this - is there no way at all you can make it here before 31/12? If you have everything in place .... can you not bring your plans forward?  With all that you have stated you have, I’m certain that you’d make the move

Try not to feel to down hearted. You can always rent for 3 months at a time. Unless you speak really good Spanish, and I mean good, your prospect of finding work is severely limited. The administration is unnecessary, complicated, and mind blowing. The tax system for self employed is flawed. Getting a contract for work, well you’ve got more chance of finding a golden ticket for willy wonkas. The Spanish who predominantly own business’s tend to employ family and friends of family, and that’s on every level of professions, from the town hall to a small cafe. A contract would secure you with health care, but like I said before, you have little or no chance. I’m sorry if my post isn’t what you want to read, but it’s truthful, believe me, and I’ve been here 11 years, and in the process of returning back to the uk.

I’ll agree with almost all of this - although I don’t know if tax for Autónomos is flawed - I’m Autónomo and have a damn good asesora who keeps us on the right track.  I think that’s possibly the way to navigate the incredibly complex and bureaucratic system that is Spanish business and taxation in general - an Asesor(a) who knows the system backwards and knows personally everyone of importance.

But Amelie620 is most certainly right about a Third Country National trying to get a work permit.  Not impossible of course, but difficult.

The one thing that may stand you in good stead - MAY - is an English Language teaching qualification as native speakers are always in demand to teach English.  I’m not saying there is a plethora of jobs, but certainly being a native speaker is the one thing that will put you ahead of non-native English speakers in language tuition.

me and my wife came here 4 years ago to live lock stock and barrel, we were both 55 at the time we took out private health care when we arrived, then my wife had health issues and we had to use the private health care, we took the standard cover and it was about 75 euros a month each , BUT we were not covered for this and not covered for that and it was basically a waste of time and money

we looked into the self employed scheme ( Atonamo) and the payments start in the first year at 80 euros then 125 euros in the next 6 months then 205 until the end of year 2 then in year 3 it peaks at 306 euros plus a monthly payment to your accountant of approx 37 euros

the monthly total is now 343 euros per month, BUT this allows you and your partner to work leagally in Spain , your accountant will do your Spanish tax return once a year whether you work or not, but you can work anywhere , even for a company and it is legal, yes it sounds a lot of money but what do you get in return

you and your partner get the full Spanish NHS card for any treatment you may require,  and to bear in mind the Spanish NHS is a country mile than the UK one , all you need is an interprater you only pay approx 10 percent of

your prescriptions if you have any

when we got ours we started to work part time and this pays for the payments above so if done right it can work

Not to mention that Autónomos were looked after during shutdown - well, I know we were - we received the Prestación de cese de actividad and had Autónomo payments suspended

The reason I said autonomo is flawed is because it’s not a fair system. Not at all. Someone can earn a few thousand a month, and someone else can earn under a thousand, which is the minimum to earn, yet still pay the same amount every month, as well as your accounts fee. In the uk you pay usually in January before the new tax year in April. You send in all your receipts and invoices then he bills you his fee, usually around £150/200, for the work, no where near what you pay here. There’s no wonder there’s a thriving cash in hand/black economy in Spain.
