hi , i live in the UK,  me my mum and my son are looking to move to almeria next year , we have a 2 week holiday booked in February to retamar as we want to look at the area (we have hired a car !), we want to rent 2 apartments,  and both have a years rent up front

My question is how easy/hard is it to permanently rent ? , my mum is retired,  but me and my 18 year old son are looking for work , this will be a permanent relocation

Thank you in advance

You will need to seek residency status within 90 days of arrival. Moreover your retired mother will not receive annual updates to her UK state pension or health cover. IF you move here before 31 December when the Brexit Transition period ends you could avoid this. Otherwise you will find that as third country nationals you will have to have an annual income that is four times the level required at present. This is the predicament faced by many UK citizens who had planned to move to live in Spain at some point. The Brexit vote put an end to that.

The criteria are that you show you have sufficient income to support those in your household, this may be in terms of capital held or it may require you to show what income you have coming in over a 3 month period. You also need to show that you have adequate health insurance cover. It's best, given the more complex family situation that you mention, that once you arrive you arrange to see a Gestor who will advise and assist you for a fee.

A gestor is authorized to do legal work but is not a lawyer. They can help with most documents for you, if not all. They are cheaper than a lawyer.

Hello there and welcome to the forum. As Chrisso has already mentioned above, things will change dramatically for uk citizens wishing to immigrate to Europe at the end of this year.

If you are uk passport holders, and unless a further deal is done between Europe and or Spain and the U.K., then you will be subject to the third country national immigration rules, much as would currently apply to a citizen of say Canada or the USA

Now, it is possible that this will change before the end of the year if an agreement is reached between the various parties. If that happens then a new procedure will be introduced which you will need to follow.

I'm very very sad to say that the era of free movement is coming to an end, and the idea of being able to come to Spain and look for work will be a thing of the past. Coming to Spain to retire will still be possible if you meet the income requirements for third country nationals, currently around €2000 per month for a single person, plus comprehensive private healthcare.

I'm so sorry I don't have any better news for you, but unless you hold a European passport or are entitled to one through ancestry, then this is the reality from 1st January 2021.

So , as it stsnds , (possibly after 2020)

My mum who is retired now , but will have over £100,000 in the bank , woukd be ok to move there

But me and my 18 year old son , it would be more difficult,  even though I will have over £40,000 in the bank ?

I know no one knows what will happen after brexit,

Its just all confusing me

True but it's worth it. We are now here in Spain 14 yrs or so and don't regret one minute of it. Our dogs love it here too. Ha ha.
