After repeatedly asking the Consulate " what is holding up negotiations on getting a Spanish License" I am wondering if anyone has raised a petition regarding this ? If so can anyone point me in the direction of signig this ?

What’s holding it up is DGT want live access to DVLA vehicles registry, and DVLA don’t want to give it.  That’s about it.

That, apparently, is the line in the sand.  Unless that is delivered, no amount of signatures on a petition will make the slightest bit of difference

Ok that is the first I have heard of this thank you. Is there a reason they do not want to give this information ? Surely this just applies to vehicles in the UK so I can not see what the Spanish want that for ?

No, the reason is that there are still plenty of UK plated vehicles in Spain.  Without DVLA access, they can’t at side of road check where car is registered, if M.O.T is current etc etc.

Probably not an issue for tourists, but there are still residents driving UK plated cars, and of course they will be out of M.O.T

That being said, a resident caught driving a UK plated car will have the car immediately confiscated and impounded, however given the number of UK plated vehicles that appear here during the year, Guardia Civil obviously feel that no longer having access hampers their operations

OK I see. I have seen very few near us but we are out in the country. I still do not see why the DVLA will not give this info as it surley helps road safety. OK thank you for the information.

This is a link to Euro Weekly publication regarding this. https://euroweeklynews.com/2022/05/06/spain-wants-automatic-access-to-dvla-database-in-return-for-driving-licence-extension/

I'm tired of hearing that people from the UK dragged their feet changing their driving license when some found it almost impossible to get residency regardless of being in Spain before 2021 which meant that you couldn't change it without it. I received my residency this month 17 months after arriving but surprise surprise they refused my wife who is a UK citizen but just happens to have been born in Russia.

You didn’t need residency to register to change - only show that you had applied

I left Dario trying to figure out if Spanish lawyers actually know the law or if they just guess.😡

Well I must say it was well worth asking the question. Thanks all as I now see what the problem is. I am a bit mystified as to why the DVLA are happy to pass the information on a case by case basis but not as a normal event. I have received speeding fines from France so what is the difference. Hey ho and I will carry on with the driving lessons.

A good question … and one I have not yet figured out.  People complaining that their lawyers have let them down here seems to be a common occurrence.  As near as I can make out, and at risk of repeating myself, for this I have mentioned before; it seems people have had a great experience with XYZ lawyers whilst buying their house, so decide to use them for residency / driving licence.  But XYZ specialize in shifting houses and so have little up-to-date knowledge of the myriad of bureaucratic obstacles that need to be negotiated.

But they want to keep the €€€ flowing and I think maybe ego plays a part - instead of saying “I don’t know about that, but I’ll find out”, they seem to want to appear ever-knowledgeable and so undertake the work.

Often with less than satisfactory results, judging by the amount of “my lawyers made a hash of the paperwork / didn’t know what they were doing” posts I’ve seen both here and on other forums.  It is sadly *NOT* an uncommon complaint
