Me too - The staff are lovely and much prefer them to the Goldcar; eurocar and hertz etc.

Used them all and had bad experience with every single one over the years. Regarding staff, they've all worked for the different companies over the years so it can be pot luck on the day, how long the shift they've been on, miserable clients (yes it does work the other way, I've seen it). I've booked 3 times with Goldcar the last 12 months, I take out my own international driving insurance (£60 per year) and I'm very clear about this at the desk so no hard sell (they only hard sell to people without, and to be fare, it's worth it when it goes wrong, but you can get cheaper than at their desk, by which time it's too late, sort it before getting there).
I take full images and video of car with employee present and date stamped contract without signature on until I've checked everything.
On return I insist on a personal handover and sign off and not simply any car companies key drop facility.
I saved myself approx £1000 last year in car rental by using the 'cheaper' companies, you just need to follow a few processes, be thorough, firm. If you drive more than a couple of times a year overseas, I fully recommend getting your own international car insurance.

Icarhire insurance. Com. But I'm sure there are other annual policy providers.
You still have to pay for damages upfront as you normally would, you then claim back afterwards from this policy.
So different from their (car hire) policy which can be around £20 a day where you literally dump the car whatever the condition and no questions asked.
I actually pay £50 annually on checking, including lost key cover.
Alternatively there are lots of other short term policies you can buy in advance for around £4 (AXA) a day, still allot cheaper than the desk price.
We have used :-

for many years £ 39.99 per year. They have been no problem and we would definitely recommend them.
