Hi

My husband and I are looking for a property in Almeria City.  We are both hit 50 this year and are hoping for a permanent move / early retirement.

We just wondered if anyone would like to meet us for a beer and a tapas when we visit at Easter just so we could pick your brains on the best way to go about moving, bank accounts, solicitors, etc etc

We are total novices and have never owned a property abroad before and would appreicate a chat

Thanks

Hi there,

I don't live in Almeria city but have looked into it.  As we get older one needs to think of being close to public transport, decent hospitals etc.

Most people live in flats in the city but there are also modern town houses (triplex or duplex), often with no garden just a paved terrace.

I would advise you to avoid some of the areas bear the Alcazaba which may seem like good value as there are older inexpensive houses often for sale.  This area is also quite near the port, Pescadería and the Chancla.  There are reputedly potentially conflictive areas.  To British newcomers they might appear 'typically spanish' but it's an area where it's not a good idea to leave anything in your car, if you get what I'm trying to say!  Be very careful.

Hi

Thank you for your reply and yes I understand what you are saying.

We have stayed near the Alcazaba a few times and in that area we felt quite safe and welcome, but not so sure about the areas west of that.  Never had any issues but sometimes you just feel where you should be and where you should not.

Happy to retire to an apartment,  just need to choose the right area.

Will have another search around at Easter

thanks

Hi Tanya,

Almeria is a great coastal city, but very Spanish, so expats few, but many in other places within 30 mins travel. it has a great public transport system to move around.

I bought a place, under a hour from Almeria over 5 years ago, also owned a place in Spain in the mid 80's for 10 yrs, so have a good insight of the pro's and con's. if i can be of any help to the both of you, please get back to me.

Regards Tom.

Hi Tanya

Sorry I didn't see your post until late in the day.  Have you now bought a place in Almería city?

I bought a place here myself last year, after having rented in various parts of the city for four years.  You will need to choose which part to live in carefully, for example I wouldn't like to live in either Pescadería or La Chancla, which I see another person has suggested.

If you haven't yet made the leap and would still like some advice please let me know.  Alternatively, if you are here already I'd be happy to meet for a coffee anytime.

Good luck

CarolAnn

Hi

Thank you so much for your reply.

Sadly we have had our April and may house hunting trips to almeria cancelled due to covid  restrictions.

My husband and I would love to meet up for a coffee and a chat when we arrange our next trip.

We had previously been attracted by the prices in the areas you mentioned but after visiting we soon realized why the prices are keen.

We have after many trips and lots of walking narrowed our search but would really appreciate a chat on the process of buying etc

Thanks and stay safe

I'd be delighted to meet you when you next come, get in touch again when you know your dates.  I went through the buying process myself, without a solicitor, but if you don't fancy the DIY approach you can employ a gestor, which is much cheaper than an abogado (solicitor), which you do not need at all.  In the process I met lots of helpful people and learned many things about Spain, and increased my spanish vocabulary.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Hi

Sadly no, we have not made the move.  I had a couple of bad years loosing both my parents, so lots of things to sort out.

On a lighter note, my husband and I retired last June and have spent the time since house/pet sitting in the UK and have barely been at home.  We are taking this time to re adjust to our situation, we have not given up the hope that we will live in almeria at some time in the future.

T & M xx
