There is a hostal in Taberno which offers cheap, clean accommodation but you will need some Spanish to arrange your stay.  You will also need transport.  Airbnb might also be worth a look. 

Take a look around lots of different areas.  They all vary and there is something to suit for everyone.  Sending you a PM.

 We stayed in' Hostal Meson' Arboleus , when we were house-hunting -not at all grand but comfortable reasonable size  rooms good price and good food and friendly hosts, easy to park and near dual carriageway.

We stayed at sol de taberno whilst we house hunted.  Was lovely there . 

We stayed at the la parilla in albox basic but very nice, also quite central.

Try to fly to Almeria….Jet 2 cancelled our flight there last minute, so we ended up going to Malaga which was a good 2hrs 15mins to Almeria & likely longer to Albox.
