In Huércal Overa & area...many `properties have these massive netted pool areas...far more so in this area than any other...why is this. Or why do you think this is...?

I assume you referring to enclosures?

If so they are to keep a fly free area. This is necessary in the St Maria and Huercal Overa area because of the numerous pig farms in the area.

This is something that is not necessary in Arboleas because pig farms are not allowed.

Yes huge pool and garden enclosures ...But three properties I've seen... are listed as Zurgenia "area"...but what seems like a long way from Zurgenia "town "  and on the map ... much closer to Los Higuerales.

Id guessed it was a fly issue and wondered why...wondered why id not seen these enclosures in other areas...  but isnt Los Higuerales...listed as Arboleas?

...

We've been looking for a house in that area since last September so have got to know all the different areas quite well! Although Los Higuerales is part of Arboleas municipality it is actually quite far out and closer to areas where there might be pig farms. Regarding 'Zurgena area', there are lots of houses for sale in El Cucador which, although part of Zurgena municipality, is about 10 minutes drive away from Zurgena itself. You can usually tell when a property is in El Cucador as the agents often say that it is 'walking distance to a popular local bar' which is the one bar in El Cucador. Los Palaces is another little hamlet often described as Zurgena Good luck in your search! Be sure to check that everything is fully legal and registered and that anything you consider buying has a certificate of first occupancy.

Not just pig farms.  The whole area has loads of agriculture and the flies are a nuisance.  Eating outside for a good proportion of the year is part of the joy of Spain (imho) but if you want to do that you have to wait for the sun to go down.  Then if you put a light on all the moths and other insects expect to join the party. Enclosures are a way to stop that.  Alternatively, eat late and in the dark 🙄🙄.

Los Higuerales Has a lot of flies due to the goat farming nearby. But in general there are flies in most place inland Spain.

Reason fly netting is so popular.

Although people talk a lot about flies, it's more things like mosquitos, snakes and wasps that people are keen on keeping out as ordinary flies are not usually such a problem as long as your neighbours dont have horses, goats etc.

Juanida   Thank you...

Well... I did see a (smallish) snake in Albox town...slithering along the pavement it went into a crack in a wall and was gone...Not something one see's on a dally basis I might add...but it made me think...OK !!

Snakes in pools I'm sure are not a common site... but I'm sure that happens too.

Maybe one should ask the question... Does this part of Spain have many / any Poisonous snakes ?

...Kindest regards

PS...You are all selling me on the idea of an Enclosure for house and pool BTW...

Hi

There are snakes here in Almeria but none are poisonous. That doesn't mean a bite wouldn't hurt though so best to avoid them! Until you develop immunnity, the mozzies are the creatures most likely to irritate, although the large centipedes you find hiding under rocks and that sometimes get into the house are, in my opinion, the nastiest.
