Hi and thank you for letting me join this forum.

Like many people at the moment we are reassessing our life here in Blighty and have decided that now is the time to jump ship and leave this rock, hubby has just been made redundant ..... again and it feels as though the universe is trying to tell us something. Therefore we have done what all who consider this move do and started trawling through the 1000's of properties for sale. Our requirements are pretty simple to be honest we want somewhere that is inland, is habitable but also needs work on outbuildings etc. as our ultimate plan is to offer rural tourism accommodation. I'm also a yoga teacher so that will feature in our future plans. My initial questions are:

1) Are there any estate agents we should stay clear of, its seems as though Almeria Homes have the majority we are interested in, anyone have feedback on them?

2) I've see a lot recommend dealing with Amanda Oakley, so I have made a note of that name solicitor wise but any other recommendations?

Many thanks

Jo

Rent for 12 months first to find an area you like/suitable.

Hi Jo, Welcome to the forum. The universe is not trying to tell you anything. You're adding 2 + 2 and coming up with 22. Don't feel put-off by my post, just take it on board. Keith and Peter gave some sound advice above, but I don't think you want to spend a year looking around.

Real estate agents are good at selling property, that's their job. But, anything else is usually not consider by them. Once you sign the dotted line and pay up the property is yours. If you've struck gold and are happy with your choice, then well done! But, you could be embarking on a disastrous course. I can nearly hear you screaming at me "Get that Bloody Paddy out of my hair . . . "

Therefore, I recommend you rent in the off season for no less than 5 weeks and you'll find your dream property or at worst that Spain is not for you. I hope things work out the way you want them to, but tred (or is it "thread?")carefully, measure twice and cut once.

Hi Jo

All good advice from the other members. The only thing I would add is that time to get your Residencia as an EU citizen is running out.

I don't know what your situation is or nationality but as Brits you must be registered on the Padron ( Empadronamiento ) before the end of Dec 2020 to enable you to qualify to apply for Residencia. That is to say you would either have to own or rent a property by the end of Dec 2020 to  register. You then have until the end of June to process your Residencia.

Personally, I would suggest, as others have, renting would be the preferred option initially and give you some breathing space.

There are other threads on here that explain all that in greater detail.

Hope all goes well!

regards,

chuzstok

Hi again

Forgot to add you will need a first class solicitor.

We have used Maria at Buganvilla Roundabout, Puerto Rey, for both private purchasing and selling and on our last purchase she saved us from a near disaster purchase.

I’d also recommend Mundi Abogados at Las Buganvillas - I have no connection to them, but have seen that they speak excellent English and give excellent results.

I’d echo the others in saying don’t jump straight into buying - it can be a minefield here.  Rent somewhere for however long you feel comfortable and get a feel for the area.

My wife and I run a Health and Wellness centre in Vera, my wife being the certified Yoga instructor (4 styles), massage therapist, Naturopath etc etc.   she could certainly put you in touch with the yoga teachers in and around this area and also talk to you about retreats (we’ve just found the most incredible place to host a retreat that is also close to us and are now planning one for October)

She’d be able to give you the information you’d need on registering with Seguridad Social, getting insurance to teach and paying Autónomo.  Don’t be tempted to try do it “off the books”, because with the recent economic hit Spain has taken, TGSS are after every illegal céntimo!!

PM me if you’d like her details, she’ll happily give you chapter and verse on running a yoga business here in Spain
