My wife and I  ( British citizens) are residents in Italy and have been for about four years. We would like to retire to Spain ( both in our seventies ) we are led to believe that we must have private health cover for the first year as we cannot register an S1 without first obtaining residency and to obtain residency we require health cover, is this correct, has anyone had dealings with this issue ?  Hope this makes sense. Thank you.

Health cover is one of the requirements to obtain residency.  I shopped around, made enquiries, and eventually settled on ASSSA through Albox Insurance.  You do have to declare existing conditions.  However I do know of another couple whose bank arranged their health insurance and they didn’t have to declare anything.  Not sure which bank though.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for that information I will try Albox and check with my bank ,I never considered them.

Can you remember if you had to have a years cover or just enough until you gained your residency and were able to use your S1 ?

Thanks

Yes it had to be a years cover, cost us around 3000euros as I am over 70 but my partner is still in his 60’s
