Have been doing a bit of research on Albox, Huercal-Overa and areas in between. Very impressed with the areas and then.... we came across a lot of posts about flies, although most of these are from a few years ago. We had noticed a lot of fly screens on houses. We are looking for up to date info on this problem, hopefully from people who live there.

Hi... We have bought fairly recently a cortijo near Taberno (approximately 15 mins from Huércal-Overa and Albox in opposite direction) . We debated the need for a external area with a fly screen but are concluding that whilst there are more flies it is not uncontrollable with some precautions - screens on windows (some of ours need repaired), closing doors and food covers - and the number varies depending on the time of day.

You are trading sun for a few more flies.. Worth it in our view.. But we are in the campo where there is a varied and wonderful wildlife - lots of birds, frogs, cicadas, donkeys who wake you up in the morning. It's amazing!

Kind Regards

Hi

We just moved to Urcal, Huercal Overa, like you we worried about the flies. They can be a pain at times especially as the days get sunnier but I would recommend a fly screen enclosure. We bought a number of red top fly catchers which you can get from ferrerteria and garden centres and have noticed real difference.

We also had a tree infected with beetles that made the tree produce lots of sap ,flies swarmed on it. Tree deseased so cut it down, flies reduced enormously.

If you are more rural you expect to have flies around but don't be put off more than manageable. In the evenings they just seem to disappear altogether.

Been out in the garden working today and hot day, few around but all good.

We were told that there are lots of pig farms near Taberno and Huercal Overa and the smell and flies are bad in the summer. Yes there are flies in other areas but as one previous comment you manage it with fly screen enclosures and fly screens on windows etc. Well worth it to be in the sun 😁

What about Alhama de almeria? Are there a lot of pig farms, greenhouses in that area. Its not just sitting outside and eating for us. I love to garden. I grow fruit, veg and flowers at home. We love to walk and would like to take up cycling. We don't want to have to wear a hazmat suit. 😕 Seriously though. A few flies I can take measures for, but are we talking clouds and swarms of them?????
