My partner and myself are looking at moving to Mojacar in the near future and was wondering what the situation is like as to securing work.

Also, was wondering what the situation was like at present with regards to Brexit.

I have worked within an office environment for many years ie Secretarial and have worked in various industry's including estate agency, construction, insurance and accountancy.  I have also worked as a sales advisor.

My partner is an experienced air-conditioning/ductwork engineer but has the ability to turn his hand to anything within the construction field.

We are hoping to buy but was wondering if it would be better to rent beforehand and if so, where would be the place to go to.

We also have pets.

Any information you could provide would be much appreciated and I look forward to hearing any comments.

Thank you.

1. If you buy a property in Spain you are effectively burning your boats and a retreat will cost you monetarily, psychologically, probably physically, mentally, etc. Your foundations are minimal (at this stage) and the building is suspect too until you have all your groundwork done. Read my lips - Rent for at least a year, initially.

2. Review your situation after spending twelve months in Spain.

3 .Fast-forward twelve months. Now, do you want to press on? Do you want to retreat? Are you confused?

4. If you're not confused after the first year you're a much stronger person than I'm giving you credit for.

5. Challenge:- Before sunset today write out a SWOT analysis of your situation. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats and you can't fool yourself.

6. If you own property where you live at present, consider renting it out asap. Swallow some pride and plan ahead as much as you can.

7. Review your SWOT analysis twice a week. There will be inserts and deletions (as it should be).

8. Learn as much Spanish as you can (plenty of good tips on other threads on this forum).

9. You're not the first to make the move and you won't be the last. Just ensure you enjoy the adventure as much as you can.

Oh! And . . . Best of Luck!

if you have Uk passports you will need a visa and work permit to come to Spain and need to satisfy all the new regulations that have applied since Brexit.  if you have EU passports no problem.  You need to consider health costs as well and finance.  do lots of research before you take the plunge.  and Spanish is definately needed to get through the red tape when working here.

Is it true that quite a lot of british people are now selling up and moving back to the UK due to Brexit?

Some Brits are selling up in Spain. These are mainly people who lived under the radar for years. There's a sprinkling of Brits selling who are legally residing in Spain. Those who bought property back in the day are probably happy enough selling out and will return to the UK probably not too much hurt with the price of property there.

But, there are those who bought in Spain since 2004 and have seen their property price reduce by the month (with some but nothing near  total revival in the past 5 years). If any of these people sold up everything in the UK before they left for Spain they are about to get screwed big-time on their retreat to the UK with the price of property there.

Many will deny, but Brexit is the main reason for those retreating to the UK. For the record if every Brit in Spain voted against Brexit in the referendum, Brexit would not have happened. This is a classic case of people getting what they wished for. Brexit is doing Brits abroad no favours irrespective of what some of them keep saying, I regret to say. But, they still fly their Union Jacks and think Boris Johnson will save them. As I keep saying:- Brexit just keeps on giving!

Hi Llewe, I’m with Matthew all the way on this one.

But let’s look at the realities of moving here - firstly, do you have UK passports or Irish (or other EU country)?

If you have UK passports, you’ll have to apply for Visas to migrate here; if you want to work as well, you’ll actually need work permits.  Now unless your occupations are on a shortage list which is updated by Spain every month, you won’t get hired by a firm here and won’t get work permits.

The other option then is to apply for work permits as self-employed and start your own business here.  This is not as easy as it sounds and involves at the very least a thorough business plan to be presented - there’s a lot more to it, but I don’t know all the ins and outs of a work permit as self employed.  You will still need to prove the same amount of finance available to you as for an NLV i.e. around 32.000 € a year for first five years.  This does NOT have to be just income, it can be investments, savings whatever - you just need to prove that amount is available to you.

If you’re on Irish passports, ignore the above because you can cone here and work straight away

On top of Matthew’s advice, if you are on UK passports, I’d urge you to take advice from a migration specialist in the UK who can give you the up-to-date and accurate requirements for your particular situation.  The information I’ve given on work permits etc could already be out of date - you really need to approach the consulate and/or a migration specialist to get accurate information.
