Hi, my first post.
I've lived in the Huércal-Overa area for the past six years. First in the tiny village of Las Labores and then down the road in Úrcal. I now live in Huércal-Overa town and I'm loving every minute of it. Living in the campo(countryside) villages is a lovely experience - you can dip in and out of a quiet, country life or a lively expat/Spanish village life.
Úrcal has unfortunately lost it's shop now, but has two bars, one English and Taberna Amazir (Miguel's to the locals). Miguel's is a lovely mix of Spanish and expats, the English bar, Bar Úrcal, has only recently opened amd I have no experience of it as yet.
If you wish to find out more about Úrcal and the surrounding villages, you will be most welcome to join the very active FB groups - Úrcal & Surrounding Villages Chatter and Huércal-Overa Chatter (don't forget to answer the joining questions). Lots of useful information on both groups.
Huércal-Overa is a small but busy town with two markets, Monday (large) and Thursday (small). We are lucky to have the best hospital for miles and the general medical care is excellent. There are also several Spanish independent, walk-in medical clinics.
In addition to a brand new Lidl and Mercadona on the edge of town, it has many interesting smaller shops in the town centre. Bigger shops can be found in Lorca, 20 minutes up the A7. Or if you want much bigger - an hour up or down the A7 brings you to Almeria or Murcia, both typical large cities with huge shopping centres.
The English community in town, and villages, is well-served by the Ideal Supermarket and the next door Corner Café, both English owned and run. Ideal is very useful as a postal address if you live in the villages and countryside - they accept delivery of your parcels. Local deliveries can be a nightmare - ask anyone!
We also have an extremely active Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) and the Alcade (mayor) is very proactive. There is something going on every week in and around the town. The biggest of which is the Huércal-Overa Feria (fair) which lasts five days in October and is an excellent experience. Add to that a fabulous theatre and a recently refurbished cinema - entertainment is pretty well covered.
Restaurants are very much a personal thing, but I can highly recommend La Pimienta Rosa, La Estación Gastrobar, Los Labios and Las Cañas.
I hope I've given you an idea of what this lovely town and area can offer - please don't hesitate to ask if you would like any further information - I will do my best to help.
Hasta luego
Carolina
