My wife and I will be travelling to Spain at the end of October. We have already bought our property and will start the process to become residents.  I hold an Irish passport but my wife holds a UK passport.  My question is do we both need private health care for the first year or only my wife?

I would be grateful for any experience of the process.

Thank you

Mal

Basically, Spain isnt going to fund your healthcare whether you are an EU citizen or not. If you are of state retirement age Spain can claim back the cover of health care from Eire or the UK via an S1 or equivalent in Eire if it isnt called the same. If you are not yet of state retirement age then you will have to have paid enough into the Spanish social security system as either an employee, employer or self employed to get free health care. If that isnt the case then you and your wife are going to need private insurance.

Thank you so much for your reply.  I will be receiving my pension at the end of October but will not become resident until next year?  So, I will probably have the need for some health care at first?

Thank you
